Tottenham Hotspur 1-2 Chelsea
Marcos Alonso scored a spectacular double to give Chelsea a dramatic win over title rivals Spurs at the Whites’ new Wembley home.
The betting odds on Chelsea to win the league had already drifted after a shock opening day defeat to Burnley but things can change quickly in the Premier league with big football games coming at a furious pace.
Make no mistake; this was a huge result for both teams. Antonio Conte’s Chelsea have re-established themselves as a formidable force while Spurs have fluffed their opening lines and risk a season of home frustration.
Chelsea made a fast start with Alvaro Morata coming close with a header but then Spurs dominated as the opening 45 minutes unfolded with 13 shots to Chelsea’s four, and came so close to scoring when Harry Kane hit a post just before the break. But it was the Blues who scored the only goal of the half. Having won a free-kick some 25 yards out, full back Marcos Alonso stepped up to curl a beauty into the top right corner.
Mauricio Pochettino’s Spurs had dominated possession and continued in to do so in the second half but Chelsea defended solidly and began to grow in confidence in their counter attacks. They almost sealed the points on 72 minutes when Willian fired low from distance to strike a post.
Spurs probed and finally got their reward on 82 minutes when the unfortunate Michu Batshuayi headed through his own goal from a Christian Eriksen cross.
But then, with minutes remaining, David Luis worked well to win the ball in midfield and fed Alonso who fired low and hard to send the visiting fans into ecstasy.
