A First Win to Remember for Struggling Koln

FC Koln 1-0 VfL Wolfsburg

Bottom team Cologne gave their online betting faithful something to smile about heading into the winter break after bagging their first win of the season, albeit after 16 top-flight football games.

The Billy Goats are still rooted at the bottom and look destined to be relegated. After all, history has not been kind to clubs who were sitting 18th at Christmas. However, this victory in front of their home fans at RheinEnergieStadion should give them some hope and confidence that they can still turn around the betting odds and their season when the Bundesliga returns next year.

Christian Clemens was the hero of the match for Koln, finishing from close range on 67 minutes off a Milos Jojic assist.

The home side dominated possession in the first half as Coach Stefan Ruthenbeck fielded a young team and opted to take the initiative on the attack with a 4-4-2 formation. Despite that, however, they failed to threaten Wolfsburg as the game ended goalless at the break.

Koln persisted and Jojic almost broke the deadlock minutes after the restart had his shot not hit the crossbar. Nonetheless, they were soon rewarded with Clemens calmly slotting home Jojic’s diagonal pass over Wolves’ keeper Koen Casteels.

Wolfsburg tried to get back into the game and almost drew level as Mario Gomez nearly netted, but goalie Timo Horn saved the day and all three points to give the Goats a perfect present this Christmas.

Meanwhile, Dortmund also have something to celebrate after winning their second game in a row under new boss Peter Stoger. Teenage star Christian Pulisic scored late to give BVB a 2-1 win over Hoffenheim and propel them back to the top five.

Bayern Munich, on the other hand, secured a double-digit lead on the table following a hard-fought 0-1 victory over VfB Stuttgart.

Elsewhere, Gladbach thrashed Hamburg 3-1, while Frankfurt and Schalke, Augsburg and Freiburg, and Werder Bremen and Mainz all shared the spoils in their respective fixtures.
