It’s the most famous domestic cup competition in the world but for some of the Premier League’s big guns, it’s become more important than ever.
Manchester United, Chelsea, and Spurs are all out of the Premier and Champions Leagues and their managers are in serious danger of finishing the season potless.
So this weekend’s FA Cup football games mean a whole lot.
FA Cup Quarter-final
Manchester United vs Brighton & Hove Albion
Betting tips will say the Red Devils should overcome Brighton but then they also said Jose Mourinho’s men would beat Sevilla. And having exited the League Cup to Bristol City he’ll be determined to avoid another disaster. But Brighton are dangerous customers, brilliantly coached by Chris Hughton and on the brink of league safety. The Seagulls won’t fear Old Trafford.
Swansea City vs Tottenham Hotspur
For all the plaudits Mauricio Pochettino wins, he hasn’t yet won a trophy in the UK and until he does, he won’t entirely convince many outside North London. Does he rely too much on the goals of Harry Kane? Well, we may find out as his talisman is injured. Like Brighton, Swansea have been in super form since the arrival of Carlos Carvalhal but with league survival still in the balance his priorities may lay there.
Leicester City vs Chelsea
The third of the big players have an equally testing fixture, as Antonio Conte takes his Blues to Leicester. Now, the Foxes are no Barcelona but, when the mood takes them, they can give anyone a fright, particularly if Riyad Mahrez is on song. With a top four place looking doubtful, Chelsea simply has to win this one.
Wigan Athletic vs Southampton
Mark Hughes has been appointed as the new Saints boss with the task of keeping them in the Premier League but what an opportunity he has here to get the fans on side. The visitors will have to be a bigger goal threat than of late though, as Wigan is a team full of confidence, on track for promotion from League One and conquerors of Manchester City. Watch out for the exciting striker Will Grigg.
