Der Klassiker Can Ignite the Bundesliga

Borussia Dortmund vs Bayern Munich

Okay, there are seven games to go in the 2019/20 Bundesliga season, but will we get a bigger match than this?

Dortmund v Bayern is the German Clasico, a game both clubs desperately want to win, and on Tuesday evening the top two meet at the Signal Iduna Park in a clash which will go some way towards determining how this season pans out.

These two giants have re-started impressively, with two wins each, leaving BVB four points behind the Bavarians.

While third-placed Bayer Leverkusen are in irresistible form, Die Werkself need this game to be a draw or home win to stay in the race, and it would be a major surprise if both BVB and Bayern falter.

22 of the previous 26 Bundesliga titles have been won by one of these two teams, and the last seven by Bayern Munich. The SBOBET odds have backed Hansi Flick’s team to win another since the turn of the year, but a Dortmund victory will certainly make things interesting.

Talking Points

Bad blood

The rivalry between Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich was relatively amicable for much of their history in this competition, but things turned a little nasty in 1996. German and Bayern Legend Lothar Matthaus lit the blue touch paper by calling Dortmund midfielder Andreas Moller a crybaby, which resulted in the BVB man giving Matthaus a slap!

The fans of both teams reacted loudly, egging their players on to fight, and so the rivalry changed. In 1999, Bayern goalkeeper Oliver Kahn aimed a kung-fu kick at Dortmund’s Swiss striker Stephane Chapuisat and later seemed to bite Heiko Herrlich’s ear.

And in 2001, Der Klassiker set a yet to be broken record for bad behaviour, in a game which yielded 10 yellow cards and three reds.

There is no love lost here.

Dortmund can sniff a chance

After an impressive resumption in play by hammering Schalke in the Revierderby, Lucien Favre’s team went on the hunt for Die Wolfe on Saturday, and they came out with a comfortable 0-2 victory.

Jadon Sancho made a welcome return, coming off the bench to set up BVB’s second goal. He showed no sign of his groin strain when he broke at lightning speed before teeing up Achraf Hakimi for the killer blow.

Sancho has now been involved in 30 league goals, 14 scored and 16 assisted, while Raphael Guerreiro also scored to add to his two goals the previous week against Schalke.

Dortmund are dripping with attacking quality, as Thorgan Hazard and Erling Haaland are equally able to win a game with a moment of brilliance. And they know if they can beat Bayern on Tuesday the league will be blown wide open.

Ruthless Bayern

While Dortmund have shown they still have the winning touch, so have Bayern. The league leaders took the opportunity to exact revenge from Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday.

Bayern got retribution for a 5-1 thrashing earlier in the season with a 5-2 victory. Robert Lewandowski scored his 26th goal of the league season while Leon Goretzka and Thomas Muller were both on target.

Head coach Hansi Flick can rely on his attack just as much as his opposite number can.  Muller with 17 assists is the best in the league, one ahead of Sancho.

There are so many world-class players to fill the pre-match Bundesliga 2020 news, so take your pick who will be the match-winner.

History

The Bavarians had their ruthless streak on show for all to see when the two teams met at the Allianz Arena earlier in the season. Lewandowski scored a brace while Serge Gnabry added a third and BVB defender Mats Hummels put through his own net.

That 4-0 win stretched Bayern’s lead over BVB in the head to heads by 36 to 19, with 16 draws in the 71 games played since 1992.

Both teams are bang in form right now; Dortmund have won their last six home games in a row, while Bayern are on an eight-match winning streak.

Betting Tip

??
Borussia Dortmund vs Bayern Munich Double Chance Borussia Dortmund or Draw @ 1.82
May 27, 00:30 (GMT+8)

So where do we go with this huge match? The Bundesliga 2020 betting odds for this match pitch the hosts at 3.44 with Bayern at 1.85 and the draw at 3.73.

BVB and Bayern have scored 154 goals between them, 80 to 74 in the leaders’ favour, and I think there will be goals aplenty in this game, and 4-6 at odds of 2.13 is a decent alternative bet.

But even in an empty stadium, I expect BVB to take the game to their visitors and come out with a result which will keep the race alive.
