Inter Milan vs AS Roma
Inter Milan and Roma are set to meet in the quarter-finals of the Coppa Italia, their second meeting of the season.
Their first matchup in Serie A back in December did not go so well for Jose Mourinho as his Roma side were thrashed 3-0 at home by Simone Inzaghi’s Inter.
The Nerazzurri have been nearly unbeatable since, winning seven of their last eight games in all competitions.
But can Mourinho’s in-form Giallorossi defy the Coppa Italia 2022 betting odds and beat his old side on his return to the San Siro?
Talking Points
Impressive Inter have tough test before cup tie
Inter Milan are looking good for a second straight Scudetto. They are currently on top of the table, four points clear of both Napoli and AC Milan with a game in hand and are unbeaten in their last 14 league games (11 wins, 3 draws).
The Nerazzurri will meet rivals Milan in a big the Derby della Madonnina this weekend, though, so they are expected to field a significantly rotated side for their midweek cup clash.
Inter coach Simone Inzaghi made a host of changes to their lineup in the last Coppa Italia round against Empoli, and it very nearly backfired. They needed a late equaliser from centre-back Andrea Ranocchia and an extra-time winner from Stefano Sensi to get the 3-2 win.
Sensi has since been loaned out to Sampdoria, so he will not play a part against Roma. Joaquin Correa also left the Empoli match early after suffering a hamstring injury and is unlikely to feature.
Alexis Sanchez, who replaced Correa and scored Inter’s opening goal against Empoli, is in line to get a rare start. Sanchez has been in fine form of late with four goals and an assist in his last eight appearances. That includes the winning goal in Inter’s Supercoppa win over Juventus.
Inter have been absolutely dominant at home this season. They have lost just once in 16 matches at San Siro in all competitions and are currently on a 10-match winning streak.
In-form Abraham powering Roma revival
After back-to-back defeats to start the new year, Roma are back on track. The Giallorossi have won their last three games in all competitions, which includes their 3-1 come-from-behind win over Lecce in the last round of the Coppa Italia.
And they will like their chances of extending that winning streak when they face relegation-threatened Genoa on the weekend.
Tammy Abraham has been in exceptional form this season. The English striker made Coppa Italia 2022 highlights with a goal against Lecce, and he followed it up with a brace in a 4-2 win over Empoli in the league. Abraham has now scored 12 goals in his last 12 games in all competitions.
Meanwhile, midfielder Sergio Oliveira has made an immediate impact since his arrival on loan from FC Porto. The Portuguese has two goals and an assist in his three appearances thus far.
There could be even more good news for Jose Mourinho, as captain Lorenzo Pellegrini could make his return from injury after missing most of the last month.
History
Roma and Inter have had quite the competitive rivaly over the years. Over their last 28 Serie A matches, Roma hold a very slight 8-7 edge in wins, while there have been 13 draws.
It has been equally close in the Coppa Italia. Both sides have three wins apiece, with one draw. Roma won both legs in their most recent quarter-final tie back in 2013.
However, Inter have had the upper hand in recent contests. They won 3-1 at San Siro last season and won again 3-0 in their most recent meeting in December, with three goals in the first half. Hakan Calhanoglu starred with a goal and an assist.

February 9, 04:00 (GMT+8) |
SBOTOP odds have Inter Milan installed as 1.59 favourites to overcome Roma, who are priced at 4.70 to get the win. Meanwhile, a draw is at 4.20.
While Inter have been in incredible form of late, it’s hard not to ignore their big derby clash with Milan. Simone Inzaghi will field his strongest possible squad for that match, so he will likely rotate heavily against Roma.
As for Roma, they should have a relatively straightforward win over Genoa in the weekend. And Mourinho will surely still field his strongest side to get his revenge against his old club after his humiliating defeat to them.
