Champions League: London Meets Bavaria in Potential Classic

Tottenham Hotspur vs Bayern Munich

Spurs must have dreamed of Champions League nights like these.

A new multi-million pound, state-of-the-art stadium hosting some of the world’s finest footballers is enough to get even the most reserved SBOBET football fan drooling.

While German champions Bayern Munich have hit the ground running this season and top the Bundesliga after the weekend action, Spurs have made an unconvincing start to the Premier League campaign and are currently 10 points off the pace.

However, as we all saw last season, there is nothing quite like a big European night to inspire Mauricio Pochettino’s side to create even more Champions League 2019 highlights.

Talking Points

Certainly, the Argentine coach will have been lifted by Saturday’s victory over Southampton, a result and spirited performance to bring him and his players some much-needed relief after winning just two of their previous nine top-flight matches — a run stretching back to last season.

It also went some way toward dispersing storm clouds that had been gathering following back-to-back defeats: an embarrassing midweek League Cup exit to League Two Colchester following an unfortunate reversal at Leicester City.

Meanwhile, Bayern’s hard-fought 3-2 win at newly promoted Paderborn saw them take up a familiar place at the top of the Bundesliga standings and was further proof of their quality, even when not playing well.

Any side with the likes of Philippe Coutinho, Robert Lewandowski, Ivan Perisic, Manuel Neuer and Lucas Hernandez is a talented one.

Indeed, Lewandowski has just become the first Bayern player to reach double figures after six matches and only the second after former Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored 10 times in eight successive matches to start the 2015/16 campaign.

As the German champions come to London, Spurs should not forget their own qualities which helped them reach last season’s Champions League final, seeing off the likes of Manchester City, Ajax and Bayern’s arch-rivals Dortmund along the way.

Although reportedly unsettled, Christian Eriksen remains a top performer and Harry Kane and Lucas Moura, underused according to many of the Spurs faithful, are quality players.

They complement the defensive expertise of Belgian duo Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen, who is seemingly now back in favour after not being included in the early part of the campaign.

New signing Tanguy Ndombele has also settled well and showed another example of his all-around game with a goal against Southampton.

Perhaps what will please Pochettino most of all, though, is the character his troops showed in that game. Playing for more than an hour with 10 men, they refused to be beaten and held on for a 2-1 win.

Two of the greats of club football, one with an established European pedigree, the other with only a fleeting one but a match-up of genuine quality. Another entertaining night awaits in north London.

History

These sides have met just four times competitively in their history – and those four games were crammed into 15 months in the early 1980s.

In the 1982/83 European Cup Winners’ Cup, the two were paired together in only the second round and Steve Archibald netted for Spurs in a first leg 1-1 draw at White Hart Lane.

Bayern were far too strong in the second leg, however, emerging 4-1 winners (5-2 on aggregate).

The following season, little over 12 months later, they were drawn against each other in the third round of the UEFA Cup.

The Germans won the first leg 1-0 at home before Archibald and Mark Falco goals overturned the deficit in the second leg.

Spurs, famously, went onto win the tournament that season, defeating Anderlecht on penalties.

Betting Tip

??
Tottenham Hotspur vs Bayern Munich 1X2 Draw @ 3.65
October 2, 3:00 (GMT+8)

Our Champions League 2019 betting odds favour Bayern who are priced 1X2 @ 2.16 with Spurs 1X2 @ 2.99 and the draw @ 3.65.

I would imagine this will be fairly tight with not too many goals so how about under 2.75 goals @ 2.19, total goal 0-1 @ @ 4.70 or even total goal 2-3 @ 2.04?

An obvious bet for this clash would be to opt for a score draw, so how about a correct score of 1-1 @ 6.60?

I have a sneak for Spurs in this one but the odds Double Chance Spurs or Draw @ 1.64 don’t do it for me.

Bayern Munich -0.50 @ 2.16 with Asian Handicap odds does appeal and I was so tempted to plump for a home win with Asian Handicap betting Spurs +0.25 @ 2.03.

A SHORT EXPLANATION ON HOW OUR (??) BETS ARE WORTH:
?? = €20 (Highly confident) ?? = €10 (CONFIDENT) ?? = €5 (SOMEWHAT CONFIDENT)
