Catalans Defiant to Shock Madrid and Betting Odds

countdown banner

New boys Girona hit Real Madrid with a stunning double strike to give La Liga football betting fans the shock of the season so far.

And Girona’s amazing triumph did a favour for fellow Catalans Barcelona, who won in Bilbao to stretch their lead over Los Blancos to eight points.

Girona 2-1 Real Madrid

The handicap betting offer, before a ball was kicked in Girona, suggested the hosts would need at least a two-goal start to make a game of it. And when Isco put Real ahead on 12 minutes things looked ominous. But Cristhian Stuani and Portu hit two in an explosive five minutes to send the home fans wild.

Athletic Bilbao 0-2 Barcelona

And that prompted more smiles down the road in Barcelona, making their win over Athletic Club all the sweeter. Lionel Messi put the leaders in charge at the San Mames Stadium and Paulinho scored late to settle matters after Athletic Club fought hard to get back in the game.

Alaves 1-2 Valencia

Valencia’s fantastic run goes on and Simone Zaza scored his ninth of the season in a tough battle at bottom club Alaves. Alexis Ruano headed an equaliser for the hosts, but when Rodrigo Ely handled in the box, Rodrigo Moreno fired home the penalty. Valencia are four points behind Barca.

Atletico Madrid 1-1 Villarreal

Atletico are four points further back, alongside Los Blancos, after sharing the spoils with the Yellow Submarine. Angel Correa scored from a tight angle to put Atletico in charge but a Carlos Bacca header on 81 minutes frustrated Diego Simeone’s men.

Sevilla 2-1 Leganes

Not a good weekend for Madrid’s other side as Leganes slumped to seventh after surrendering in Seville. Wissam Ben Yedder and Pablo Sarabia fired home either side of an Alexander Szymanowski penalty to take the hosts up to fifth; and Sarabia’s was a cracker!

Malaga 2-1 Celta Vigo

Juan Carlos Unzue’s Malaga climbed off the bottom with their first win of the season against a strong Celta Vigo side. Adrian Gonzalez put the hosts in front; but it looked like Celta’s hotshot Iago Aspas had grabbed a point, until Recio scored a late winner from the spot.

Getafe 2-1 Real Sociedad

Getafe came from behind to secure a thrilling win against Sociedad after going down to an early Mikel Oyarzabal goal. The hosts came out for the second half with purpose and were rewarded by late strikes from Angel Rodriguez and Jorge Molina.

Eibar 2-2 Levante

And there was another fine fightback as Eibar came from two behind to grab a point against Levante. Jose Luis Morales and Enis Bardhi gave the visitors a half-time lead, but Anaitz Arbilla and Charles earned a draw for a much-improved Eibar in the second half.

RCD Espanyol 1-0 Real Betis

Gerard Moreno scored his fourth goal of the season to give Espanyol a hard-fought win against Real Betis. Moreno’s second-half strike lifts Espanyol to tenth while Real Betis stay eighth.

Las Palmas 1-3 Deportivo La Coruna

It’s six defeats on the bounce for Las Palmas, although the hosts looked to be on the way to a win when Loic Remy put them ahead in the first half. But a Celso Borges double and a Lucas Perez strike gave Depor a much-needed victory lifting them to 16th.
