Can the Costa Ricans shine bright this time?

Honduras vs Costa Rica

Oscar Ramirez’ men will be determined to keep the pressure at the top when they visit the Estadio Francisco Morazan, but they are more than aware of the threat that Honduras bring to the table.

Casual sports betting fans might be thinking that Costa Rica’s CONCACAF World Cup qualifying match against the bottom team won’t be competitive – at least not after the home side yielded six goals to the Americans last Saturday. However, the Clasico centroamericano faithful know very well that football games between these two sides always have the potential to become a live betting thriller.

The two have split their last 13 head-to-head, winning five each and drawing the other three including their latest stalemate at the Copa Centroamericana two months ago. Hence, if their history is any indication of what is about to happen, another hard-fought and spirited draw is the most likely result.

Of course, La Sele are still favoured to take all three points. They are second in the standings for a reason, and the attacking quality they have with Joel Campbell and Christian Bolaños heading their frontline is something that Los Catrachos will fear.

They also have goalie Keylor Navas who made a lot of great saves the last time out to help the Ticos avoid further embarrassment against the Mexicans.

Honduras, on the other hand, will be coming from a disastrous showing at San Jose, California, so their confidence might be at rock bottom when they host their rivals.

Nonetheless, if there’s any silver lining for the home outfit, it is the fact that they beat the Costa Ricans when they last visit back in 2013. Interestingly, current Honduras boss Jorge Luis Pinto was the manager of Costa Rica at that time.

Los Catrachos need a win here to stay in the hunt for a qualification berth, so I don’t expect them to utilise a defensive formation similar to what they did against the USA. The same goes for La Sele as they would want to prevent going further down the table.

With that said, I predict this meeting to be more physical with plenty of chances and scoring opportunities. A draw – which I mentioned is a likely result – gives you odds at 3.00, but it is also not farfetched for Costa Rica to overcome an Asian Handicap -0.25 that pays at 2.03 given their squad’s depth.
