Bundesliga: Will a Game Against Bayern Munich Cure Gladbach’s Ills?

countdown banner

Borussia Monchengladbach vs Bayern Munich

Borussia Monchengladbach’s match against Augsburg in Week 1 ended in a 4-4 draw, and they then fell to Bayer Leverkusen 3-0. In contrast, Bayern Munich have won back-to-back against Werder Bremen (4-0) and Augsburg (3-1) to kick off their title defence.

It’s been a tough start to the 2023-24 campaign so far for Borussia Monchengladbach, but this upcoming match against Bayern Munich might give them a much-needed boost.

As weird as it may sound, that has been the case as Borussia Monchengladbach have been Bayern Munich’s bogey team in recent years.

And the Foals aim to extend their unbeaten run against the defending Bundesliga champions when they clash anew at Borussia-Park on Saturday.

Talking Points

Gladbach’s defencive frailties are starting to show

On a night where they needed to score goals, Borussia Monchengladbach came out flat against Bayer Leverkusen, and what made their loss worse is that they looked out of it on the defencive end.

Bayer Leverkusen launched 24 shots total, with 11 of them on target, while Borussia Monchengladbach only had 12 shots total, with only two of them on target. At the same time, Die Werkself had 60-per cent possession, while the Foals had 40-per cent possession.

The big picture here is that the Foals have been porous at the backline, as they’ve conceded seven goals over the first two games of this Bundesliga season, which is a league-high together with Augsburg. They have also allowed 44 shots by the opposition, which is only four less than Werder Bremen.

The loss of team captain Jonas Omlin is going to be a huge blow. The Swiss goalkeeper, who last played on Sunday, is expected to be sidelined for months after going under the knife to fix his shoulder.

Meanwhile, fellow defenders Nico Elvedi, Christoph Kramer, Manu Kone, Stefan Lainer, Hannes Wolf, and Luca Netz should also remain on the sidelines against Bayern Munich, which doesn’t help the Foals at all defencively.

Kane unfazed by the Bayern Munich spotlight

Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane applauds fans after their Bundesliga match against Augsburg

Good luck for the Foals this weekend, as they’re tasked with trying to stop Harry Kane in his tracks. After starting off on a bad note against RB Leipzig in the DFL-Supercup final, Kane is back in form, having scored three goals in his first two Bundesliga matches.

Harry Kane has settled well into life in the Bundesliga thus far following his unceremonious exit at Tottenham, showing us that he isn’t afraid of taking on the challenge of leading Bayern Munich once again to the promise land.

And unlike in North London, where he’s often tasked with carrying the whole team, Harry Kane finally has a great shot of ending his personal trophy drought because he has a stronger supporting cast at Bayern Munich, with studs such as Leroy Sane, Serge Gnabry, and Kingsley Coman accompanying him up front.

History

Since 2011-12, Borussia Monchengladbach have tallied 35 points against Bayern Munich, which is by far the most of any team against the 11-time defending champions (W10, D5, L9), and they are undefeated in their last five matches (W3, D2). All in all, no team has beaten the Bavarians as often as the Foals (W28).

In their previous meeting in February, Borussia Monchengladbach notched a 3-2 victory against 10-man Bayern Munich, which featured five different scorers.

Lars Stindl, Jonas Hofmann, and Marcus Thuram scored for the Foals, while Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Mathys Tel scored for the Bavarians.

The Foals have lost their first home game of a Bundesliga campaign for the first time in seven years. Should they lose to Bayern Munich this weekend, it will be the third time ever that they’ll lose back-to-back opening home games (1986-87 and 2015-16).

Betting Tip

The Bundesliga 2023 odds have installed Bayern Munich as significant 1.31 favourites to finally defeat Borussia Monchengladbach, who are the underdogs at 6.20, while a draw is at 5.80 in the 1X2 market.

Because the Foals have been the Bavarians’ bogey team, we’re not really confident in placing bets in favour of Bayern Munich.

But one thing’s for sure: SBOTOP football fans will get to see a handful of goals that will probably make it to the Bundesliga 2023 highlights reel, and Total Goals 2-3 at 2.59 is the safe bet, while Over 3.75 at 1.78 is also a possibility. Last but not least, the result of their most recent encounter, Correct Score of 3-2 in favour of the Foals (which seems unlikely), is also on offer with a whopping payout of 50.00.
