Round 27 of the 2021/22 Bundesliga campaign is upon us friends, and with plenty to play for at either end of the table, we’re looking forward to a weekend of top action and drama.
The Bundesliga 2022 betting odds have consistently backed a 10th successive league title for Bayern Munich. But with eight games left, there may still be twists and turns to come.
And the race for a top four Champions League spot is heating up with just one point separating Bayer Leverkusen in third from TSG Hoffenheim in sixth place, while at the bottom end things are becoming tense.
With Greuther Furth seemingly doomed, four teams are trying to escape the 16th and 17th positions while, just above the relegation battle, Borussia Monchengladbach still have work to do to ensure safety.
There are nine big games to look forward to and I’m taking a closer look at four which have caught my eye.
VfL Bochum vs Borussia Monchengladbach
The weekend’s fixtures begin on Friday night with a fascinating clash between 11th-placed Bochum and 13th-placed Monchengladbach and Die Fohlen are under pressure to pick up at least a point as they are the team most in danger of being dragged into the relegation scrap.
Adi Hutter’s team won a crucial six-pointer against Hertha Berlin last week as striker Alassane Plea and defender Matthias Ginter gave them a 2-0 victory which moved them seven points clear of the drop.
Another win or two will be enough for Monchengladbach to put this underwhelming campaign behind them, but Bochum isn’t the easiest place to visit as Bayern discovered recently when they took a 4-2 beating at the Vonovia Ruhrstadion.
Bayern Munich vs Union Berlin
Robert Lewandowski scored Bayern’s two goals in that game in Bochum and it looks once more like the Polish legend’s goals will fire Bayern to success.
It isn’t a done deal yet though, as Borussia Dortmund sit just seven points adrift with a game in hand, which is a match with Mainz on Wednesday.
And while it would take a spectacular set of Bundesliga 2022 results for BVB to overcome the Bavarians, the gap by the weekend could be down to four points with the two teams yet to meet.
So Bayern must take care of this next game against Union Berlin, who are handily placed in eighth and still in the hunt for a Europa League place.
With 11 goals this season, Taiwo Awoniyi is the man to watch and he scored Union’s goal in a 1-1 draw with Stuttgart last week.
Hertha Berlin vs TSG Hoffenheim
Two heavyweights meet in the capital city on Saturday, but hosts Hertha Berlin are looking a long away up the league table to catch a view of their visitors TSG Hoffenheim.
TSG held leaders Bayern to a draw last week to keep themselves in the top four hunt, and they have a real chance of winning Champions League football having taken 13 points from the last five games.
In stark contrast, their hosts have lost five on the bounce, conceding 15 goals in the process and now they sit in 17th place and desperately need to halt the downward spiral.
Hertha sailed close to the wind last season, finishing in 14th position and this time around they are in serious trouble. Recently arrived head coach Felix Magath has a big job on his plate and he has little time to make the impact required.
The SBOTOP odds are pointing to another Hoffenheim win, which could lift TSG into the top four while dumping Hertha deeper into the mire.
RB Leipzig vs Eintracht Frankfurt
There are three huge games on Sunday. Stuttering Wolfsburg are at home to third-placed Bayer and seventh-placed Koln entertain second placed BVB. But the most intriguing of all is the clash between RB Leipzig and Eintracht Frankfurt.
Both teams were due to play in the Europa League this week. But while Leipzig had their fixture against Spartak Moscow cancelled, Eintracht Frankfurt had a second leg against La Liga side Real Betis to contend with.
New head coach Domenico Tedesco has really got Die Roten Bullen moving and they have won five of the last six games and are now in a top four spot.
Portuguese hitman Andre Silva opened the scoring in Red Bull’s 6-1 destruction of Greuther Furth last week, and Leipzig recently beat Hertha Berlin by the same margin. Meanwhile, ninth-placed Frankfurt have recovered from a run of three defeats with three wins. Every team in the Bundesliga is chasing FC Bayern, and RB Leipzig were expected to be at the head of the queue. They are starting to look like challengers once again.
