Bayern Munich vs Borussia Monchengladbach
Bayern Munich’s march to their 11th straight Bundesliga title is off to a perfect start. The defending champions have won their first three games and are looking as dominant as ever despite the departure of talisman Robert Lewandowski.
The Bavarians will be out to record their fourth win in a row when they host Borussia Monchengladbach this weekend.
After a disappointing season in 2021-22, the Foals have made a fast start under new coach Daniel Farke and are currently right behind Bayern in the table.
Gladbach have had a good record against Bayern in recent years, so can they defy the Bundesliga 2022 betting odds and come away from the Allianz Arena with all three points?
Talking Points
Bayern looking better than ever
Is it possible that Bayern have gotten even better without Robert Lewandowski? It’s too early to say definitively, but their incredible statistics through three Bundesliga games certainly make a strong case that they are not missing the prolific Pole.
Julian Nagelsmann’s side are off to a fantastic start with three wins out of three, including a whopping 15 goals scored and only one conceded.
Counting their 5-3 victory over RB Leipzig in the German Super Cup, Bayern have now scored an astounding 20 goals in their four competitive games thus far.
They are coming off a 7-0 demolition of Bochum last weekend, with new star striker Sadio Mane bagging a brace. The former Liverpool man is loving life in the Bundesliga, with three league goals already in three games.
Mane is the focal point of a more fluid Bayern attack that Nagelsmann has installed, which is thriving with the increased movement and interplay sans Lewandowski.
And what’s even scarier for the rest of the Bundesliga is that Bayern utterly battered Bochum without arguably their best player thus far this season, Jamal Musiala. The teenage phenom had been brilliant in the first two games and scored three goals, but he missed out on the Bochum match due to a muscle injury.
However, he got back on the training pitch this week and could potentially make it back against Gladbach.
Foals off to fast start under Farke
Borussia Monchengladbach are back – at least that’s what their fans are hoping. After back-to-back disappointing seasons where they finished 10th and 8th, the Foals are looking to get back to challenging for a top-five place.
And they’ve started this season strong under new coach Daniel Farke, with two wins from their first three games. They beat both Hoffenheim and Hertha Berlin at home and were held to a 2-2 draw by Schalke after conceding a last-gasp penalty.
Gladbach have gotten off to a good start despite being without captain Lars Stindl, who has missed the first three games due to a thigh injury.
Luckily, the Foals’ French forwards – Marcus Thuram and Alassane Plea – have stepped up in their skipper’s absence.
After an injury-hit campaign last season, Thuram already has two goals and an assist as he looks to get back to the form that made him one of the most exciting young forwards in the Bundesliga. Meanwhile, Plea has chipped in with a goal and two assists.
The latest Bundesliga 2022 updates say Stindl has made a quick recovery and could be back to face Bayern, which would be a big boost for Gladbach.
History
Borussia Monchengladbach have been among the most competitive clubs against Bayern, who have dominated the Bundesliga over the last decade. They have beaten Bayern nine times in their last 28 league meetings, although Bayern have had 12, while there have been seven draws.
However, the Bavarians were unable to beat Gladbach last season. The Foals held Bayern to a 1-1 draw at home before beating the champions 2-1 in Munich thanks to goals by Florian Neuhaus and Stefan Lainer.
And of course, the Foals also scored a famous 5-0 victory over Bayern in the DFB-Pokal, which was the Bavarians’ biggest defeat since 1978. Ramy Bensebaini and Breel Embolo – who has since moved on to Monaco this summer – both scored braces in that match.
Betting Tip
Despite Gladbach’s recent resurgence, SBOTOP odds still have Bayern installed as massive 1.19 favourites to preserve their perfect record at home. The Foals are priced at 9.75, while a draw is 8.00.
With Bayern in such dominant form, it’s hard not to see them coming away with all three points once again at home.
Although, Gladbach have shown signs that might have turned things around under Farke and have the potential to at least make things competitive against the champions.
Thuram’s pace makes them a big threat to catch Bayern out on the counter, and while the Foals are unlikely to beat Bayern, I fancy that they can stay within two goals.
