Bayern Munich recently captured their 11th Bundesliga title in a row following Borussia Dortmund’s choke job in the final matchday. But even if they’re back on the mountaintop once again, expect the Bavarians to make key changes this summer.
Thomas Tuchel’s side will have to reinforce their squad in the upcoming transfer window and get rid of the dead weight that they currently have to contend for bigger titles other than the Bundesliga.
Other teams like Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen, and RB Leipzig will also need to strengthen if they have plans to finally dethrone Bayern Munich next season.
However, the Bundesliga 2023 odds think that it’s unlikely, especially if they don’t find a way to get rid of or improve their underwhelming players this year.
Without further ado, read on below as SBOTOP lists some of the biggest busts in the 2022-23 Bundesliga campaign.
Sadio Mane – Bayern Munich
Sadio Mane’s debut campaign at Bayern was blighted by injuries to start, and his bust-up with Leroy Sane certainly did him no favours. That was probably the last straw for Thomas Tuchel and co., as Mane has only made six appearances and was discarded further for the decisive matches in their Bundesliga title run.
Mane didn’t even get to play during their title-clinching victory over Koln, as Tuchel installed winger Gnabry at the No. 9. And most recently, there have been reports suggesting that he might be sold this summer.
In his first season in Bavaria, Mane recorded 10 goals and six assists. That is a decent return for many, but not the type you expect for someone who should be taking over as the team’s leading centre-forward.
Joao Cancelo – Bayern Munich
It’s likely that Bayern Munich will not trigger their option to buy Joao Cancelo at the end of his loan spell from Manchester City because paying at least £60 million for someone to warm the bench is never a great idea.
After being frozen out of Pep Guardiola’s rotation, Cancelo joined Bayern Munich on loan in January. He made an instant impact at Bayern Munich when he recorded an assist in his first game there, but the good run of form didn’t last long for the Portuguese full-back.
Cancelo then saw his minutes dwindle when Thomas Tuchel joined the team in April, as he had no place in the coach’s 3-1-4-2 formation.
Since Bayern Munich are fairly stacked in the full-back positions, it would be a surprise if they bought Cancelo from Manchester City. The only way we can see Cancelo back is if they somehow lose either Lucas Hernandez or Benjamin Pavard this summer.
Anthony Modeste – Borussia Dortmund
Anthony Modeste joined Borussia Dortmund on a one-year contract last summer to reinforce their attacking corps when Sebastien Haller was diagnosed with testicular cancer.
However, the 35-year-old was unable to make a significant impact at Dortmund, scoring just two goals in 26 appearances across all competitions this season. His only memorable goal was his last-minute equaliser against Bayern Munich last October, which is part of the Bundesliga 2023 highlights reel.
Now that he’s behind Sebastien Haller and Youssoufa Moukoko in the pecking order for strikers at Borussia Dortmund, Modeste will certainly seek regular game time elsewhere, and going to Saudi Arabia might be his best bet.
Patrik Schick – Bayer Leverkusen
It wasn’t too long ago when Patrik Schick was one of the hottest names in the transfer market, as he was fresh from a prolific 2021-22 campaign where he had 24 goals and three assists in 27 Bundesliga games.
But since then, his form has tailed off, as he has been mostly sidelined due to a myriad of injuries this season.
The Czech striker has been battling a groin injury for months now, although that didn’t stop Bayer Leverkusen from qualifying for Europe this year.
If manager Xabi Alonso has Schick back at 100-per cent soon, Bayer Leverkusen can dream of bigger things next season.
Yussuf Poulsen – RB Leipzig
The 2022-23 campaign is the one to forget for Yussuf Poulsen because it’s his least productive season at RB Leipzig, with two goals and one assist.
Injuries certainly didn’t help Poulsen, as he was in and out of the squad. With the likes of Christopher Nkunku and Timo Werner scoring double-digit goals, Poulsen fully lost his place in the rotation. Similar to Patrik Schick, Poulsen should work his way back to full fitness next season, as RB Leipzig will have to rely more on him for goals now that Christopher Nkunku is set to leave the club this summer for Chelsea.
