Bundesliga: BVB to Deal With a Lot of Moving Parts Post-Haaland

countdown banner

Borussia Dortmund are back to the drawing board after falling short of winning the Bundesliga title again and they will undergo an exodus in these next few weeks.

Their final matchday against Hertha Berlin had an emotional atmosphere even before kick-off since several team members will leave this summer including Erling Haaland.

Following the Norwegian’s departure, BVB’s Bundesliga 2022 odds of winning the title next season have taken a massive hit because they will be stinging from their loss – which is somewhat similar to what Bayern Munich are going through as of the moment.

Today at SBOTOP, let’s examine what’s next for the Yellow Wall as they usher in a new era.

Erling Haaland’s time with BVB was short but sweet

Not many players left their imprint in the club and in the league as fast as Erling Haaland did. He came from RB Salzburg in January 2020 oozing with potential, and he did what he’s supposed to do right away, which is to score a bunch of goals on a consistent basis.

His first match against Augsburg where he scored a hat-trick off the bench was a sign of things to come for the Yellow Wall. All in all, Haaland netted an incredible total of 86 goals in 89 games in all competitions.

At the rate he was going, he could’ve easily topped Borussia Dortmund’s all-time scoring charts sooner than later where Alfred Preissler still holds the 63-year club record for most total goals with 174.

Haaland’s time in Dortmund also yielded some silverware since he helped them win the DFB-Pokal in 2021 – which was their first major trophy in four years – and one can argue that he would’ve won more if he stayed a little bit longer.

He gave BVB fans hope because of his world-class quality. And although his relationship with the club was on borrowed time, it’ll be hard to forget the countless Bundesliga 2022 highlights he has gifted them with.

The Norwegian striker is off to Manchester City next season and the Sky Blues are hopeful that he is the missing piece to their Champions League puzzle.

Other key players will also depart the Yellow Wall

Along with Erling Haaland, Borussia Dortmund also bid farewell to club legend Michael Zorc and also to their tenured players in Marcel Schmelzer, Roman Burki, Dan Axel-Zagadou and Axel Witsel.

Zorc helped them win the Champions League back in 1997 and he stuck with the club when they were on the verge of bankruptcy back then. Schmelzer, meanwhile, made his debut with the first team back in 2008 and played there for almost two decades.

Roman Burki has been their first-choice goalkeeper for much of this season, while Dan-Axel Zagadou has been one of the top young prospects and Axel Witsel is one of their most-used defencive midfielders.

Burki will take his talents to St. Louis City in the MLS, while Witsel and Zagadou’s next clubs are yet to be determined.

With multiple players leaving this summer, Borussia Dortmund must bring in top reinforcements if they are to mount a significant challenge against Bayern Munich next season.

Borussia Dortmund welcomes back an old friend

Bundesliga: Borussia Dortmund appointed Edin Terzic as their head coach until 2025
Newly-appointed coach Edin Terzic is calling on Borussia Dortmund to take things up a level next season

Following the sudden departure of Marco Rose, Borussia Dortmund went out and appointed Edin Terzic as their head coach until 2025. Terzic isn’t exactly a new hiring for BVB since he was their interim manager from December 2020 to May 2021 after Lucien Favre was sacked.

The German-Croatian coach was the one who guided Dortmund to the DFB Pokal in 2021, so he was the best choice available given his familiarity with the club.

“We held several intensive discussions with Edin Terzic last weekend and are convinced that this personnel decision is the right one for BVB,” said current sporting director Sebastian Kehl.

“Edin knows our club, the environment, a large part of the team and the areas we would like to fine-tune to be able to offer successful football to our fans. The 2022/23 season constitutes a fresh sporting start,” he added.

Edin Terzic now faces the daunting task of taking the team to new heights next season, but he won’t necessarily return with an empty slate.

BVB have been busy in the transfer market as they’ve acquired the likes of Niklas Sule, Nico Schlotterbeck, Salih Ozcan, and Karim Adeyemi, although none of them can fill the void that Erling Haaland has left just yet.

Furthermore, Dortmund have been linked with several forwards in recent weeks, such as Ajax’s Sebastien Haller, VfB Stuttgart’s Sasa Kalajdzic, and Stade Reims’ Hugo Ekitike.
