Borussia Dortmund vs Werder Bremen
Early pacesetters Borussia Dortmund are aiming for a third win on the bounce when they entertain newcomers Werder Bremen at the Signal Iduna Park on Saturday.
This Bundesliga gamebrings together a leading contender for the 2022/23 title and a team which was promoted to the top-flight last term and could easily be dragged into a relegation scrap.
Dortmund have picked up a maximum six points from their opening two games to keep pace with the other 100-per centers FC Bayern, thanks to victories over Bayer Leverkusen and SC Freiburg, while Werder Bremen have played out two 2-2 draws against Wolfsburg and Stuttgart.
That represents a decent start for Ole Werner’s team, but they will need to pick up wins against the teams around them.
The Bundesliga 2022 betting odds price a home win at 1.36 and another draw for the Die Werderaner would be a great result, while handing BVB an unwanted early season setback.
Talking Points
BVB’s latest wonderkid signs a new deal
Dortmund has been a hotbed of young talent in recent years, with stars such as Christian Pulisic, Jadon Sancho and, most recently, Erling Haaland earning big money moves after making their names with Die Schwarzgelben.
Young England star Jude Bellingham was the breakout sensation last season and he is still at the club, and now a new kid has landed on the block.
The opening day win over Bayer was followed by a difficult trip to Freiburg where Borussia Dortmund have fallen in their last two visits. And it looked like another defeat might have been on the way when U19s star Jamie Bynoe-Gittens entered the fray three quarters way through the game with the score at 1-0 to Freiburg.
But just 12 minutes after he came on, Bynoe-Gittens scored a 76th minute leveller and Dortmund went on to win 3-1 as Youssoufa Moukoko and Marius Wolf breached the Freiburg defence.
Following the match on Tuesday, Borussia announced they had given the 18-year-old Bynoe-Gittens a new contract to June 2025 to ensure they get the best deal if and when their latest star moves on.
He has been likened to Sancho and has already shown he has the composure and skill to change a game, and we’re going to see a lot more Bundesliga 2022 highlights from this young man.
Dortmund are second favourites to lift the 2022/23 Bundesliga title at SBOTOP odds of 8.00 and new head coach Edin Terzic knows he will need to find the right blend of youth and experience as captain Marco Reus illustrated with his goal which took all three points against Bayer Leverkusen.
Werder’s squad players have a big role to play
Bremen head coach Werner has some injury concerns early in the campaign and he will be pleased with the response of his fringe players who are being asked to step up at a time the club is stepping up too.
Star striker Niklas Fullkrug has scored a goal in each match so far, though he was doubtful for the VfB Stuttgart game having picked up a knock against Wolfsburg and Werner is watching him closely.
Another striker, Eren Dincki, is near to fitness after a four-week absence due to a muscle injury and Togan midfielder Dikeni Salifou is also sidelined.
The injuries meant that 25-year-old Scottish midfielder Oliver Burke played in the home match against Stuttgart, which the Green and Whites started superbly. However, after spurning the chance to go 2-0 up, they faded and found themselves 2-1 down late in the game.
But Burke saved the day with his equaliser which was the last kick of the game. The Scot’s pace gave the VfB defence a hard time and he could be pushing for a start against BVB.
With players coming back, the competition for places will surely help Werder in their search for enough points to avoid trouble.
History
The head-to-heads between Borussia Dortmund and Werder Bremenover the past three decades have been well-contested with BVB winning 31 matches to Werder’s 21 and their have been 12 draws.
The last meeting, a 4-1 win for Borussia at the Signal Iduna Park in April 2021, speeded up Werder Bremen’s decent into the Bundesliga 2 while BVB once again trailed FC Bayern at the top of the table. Both teams are hoping for better outcomes this season.
Betting Tip
A draw at 4.64, or even a Werder Bremen win at odds of 6.76, are not entirely out of the question here. But I do think Dortmund look in good shape to make it three wins from three.
