Bundesliga: Busy Stuttgart Welcome the Hungry Foals

VfB Stuttgart vs Borussia Monchengladbach

Fourth faces eighth in a mouthwatering Bundesliga clash on Saturday when VfB Stuttgart vs. Borussia Monchengladbach kicks off at the MHP Arena.

Sebastien Hoeness led Stuttgart to a second place finish last season, and they are back in the Champions League places again. But with only six points separating VfB from 11th– placed Borussia Dortmund, there is a frantic race for the European places. And the hosts are in a hectic period as Stuttgart play PSG in the Champions League on Wednesday in a clash which could see them progress to the play-off knockout stage, having won three of their last five European games.

The visitors will hope to take advantage of their hosts’ heavy workload, and Monchengladbach boss Gerardo Seoane can be pleased with his team’s progress after a 14th place finish last term. Last week, Die Fohlen beat Bochum 3-0 at home while, after a run of four wins, Stuttgart lost 2-0 away to FSV Mainz.

Talking Points

Stuttgart’s creative muscle suffered a tweak

VfB have been full of goals in recent weeks, with nine from three games, but they drew a blank away to Mainz last weekend after brushing aside Slovan, SC Freiburg, and RB Leipzig. I expect that VfB drought to be a one-off, and for the Bundesliga 2025 highlights to have plenty of goalmouth action.

Following his summer switch for Augsburg, Bosnian striker Ermedin Demirovic is leading the way with eight goals, and he has plenty of support from former Brighton forward Deniz Undav, who has seven goals and 6’6” 22-year-old Nick Woltemade, who has six goals.

Another 22-year-old star Enzo Millot, has excelled in the Champions League, scoring two goals and making three assists, while box-to-box midfielder Angelo Stiller has weighed in with five assists in the league. This is a team with plenty of attacking threat, and the defeat to Mainz may well prove to be a blip. But with a tough assignment against PSG coming up, there is a genuine danger of meeting Die Fohlen on the back of two consecutive losses.

The Foals are still in the Euro hunt

They have had a mixed set of results in recent weeks, but Monchengladbach are still in a group of teams chasing a European place, and they are actually only five points behind Stuttgart heading into this match. Look a little closer and it is clear Die Fohlen have been on a brutal run of games, following wins over Holstein and Hoffenheim with losses to league leaders FC Bayern, seventh-placed Wolfsburg, and 2024 champions Bayer Leverkusen.

Vincent Kompany’s Bayern needed a Harry Kane penalty to edge past Seoane’s men, and Bayer Leverkusen are a team banging in form as they chase down the Bavarians. The only really poor performance Monchengladbach threw in resulted in a 5-1 loss away to the Wolves, but they were back on form against Bochum last week, as Tim Kleindienst scored his 11th league goal of the season. The 6’4” striker has made six assists too, and his arrival from FC Heidenheim in the summer has taken the load off French forward Alassane Plea, who has six goals and two assists and has been the main man in his six seasons with the club.

Another key man to watch is defencive midfielder Julian Weigl. The former Benfica man is one of the leaders on the pitch, superb on the ball, and not shy to get involved, picking up six bookings so far this season.

History

Stuttgart have won 27 of these 58 meetings in all competitions since 1992, while Monchengladbach have won 15 and there have been 16 draws. VfB won 3-1 when the two teams met earlier in the season, as Demirovic bagged a brace after Plea had equalised Undav’s opener, and Hoeness’s men had a big 4-0 victory in Stuttgart last term.

With four wins, one draw, and one defeat from the last six games, the hosts have been in strong form, while Monchengladbach ended a run of three successive defeats with the victory over Bochum, winning three and losing three of their last six.

The pre-match Bundesliga 2025 betting odds back the hosts to get back to winning ways, so let’s look at the latest SBOTOP offers and make a call.

Betting Tip

Stuttgart are at 1.43 to win this clash, with the draw at 4.37 and Die Fohlen at 5.13 to spring a surprise. And while the hosts should have too much for their visitors, I can see Monchengladbach pushing them hard.

VfB need to prove they can cope with the additional workload that Champions League football brings, and they would be delighted with a 2-1 win, which is the most likely scoreline at a price of 7.24.
