Bayern Munich vs Borussia Dortmund
All eyes will be on Der Klassiker this weekend as the first of the big European titles could be settled when FC Bayern welcome Borussia Dortmund to the Allianz Arena in Munich.
At SBOTOP odds of 1.35, Die Bayern are red-hot favourites to beat Borussia and even a draw would allow them to effectively plant both hands on the Bundesliga 2022 title.
Julian Nagelsmann’s champions-elect have a nine-point lead and with three games to play after this clash, they also hold an unassailable goal difference advantage of 27 goals.
Both teams come into the match on the back of a big win, Bayern taking a 3-0 victory away from Arminia Bielefeld while Die Schwarzgelben hammered struggling Wolfsburg 6-1 at the Signal Iduna Park.
Marco Rose doesn’t need to tell his Dortmund players that anything less than a victory and their wait for a first title since 2013 goes on. The Bundesliga 2022 betting odds say the chance has already disappeared and a 10th consecutive title awaits Die Bayern, but until it is mathematically confirmed, the Dortmunders will carry the fight.
Talking Points
Lewandowski vs Haaland
Bayern’s shock exit in the Champions League left Nagelsmann’s men with a sense of loss, but it is likely to power them on to another league title. Once again, it is the goals of Robert Lewandowski which have hit the headlines week after week. He will win yet another Golden Boot with 32 goals already and, with four games to play, he hasn’t yet ruled out reaching the 40 mark again.
Lewandowski is the complete striker, scoring goals with both feet, his head, and from distance or poaching at point-blank range. And no defence in club football has worked out how to stop him. He has a constant supply of chances from his old buddy Thomas Muller, who has made 17 assists and Joshua Kimmich, who has made ten.
Bayern fans would be delighted if the club could agree a new deal with the lethal Pole though, at 34 years of age, he may be tempted by a move to Barcelona.
BVB’s 6-1 destruction of Wolfsburg saw Erling Braut Haaland score his 18th goal of the campaign, and he too has been the subject of frenzied transfer speculation, with a summer move to Manchester City seeming to gain traction.
The 21-year-old has been beset by injury this term but has still managed to bag 18 goals from 20 games and, in Dortmund and previously with Red Bull Salzburg, he has been prolific.
At 6ft 4in he is more of a physical presence than Lewandowski but is equally skilful on the ground, though Bayern’s man has the edge in terms of consistency…he never misses!
Skipper Marco Reus is Haaland’s best provider and support with nine goals and nine assists, while young England star Jude Bellingham has impressed again with seven assists.
Battle for possession
Of course it’s the attacks of Bayern and BVB which grab the headlines, as top scorers in the league with 89 and 76 goals respectively. But they both build their play on a philosophy of possession and passing. They keep the ball more than any other team in the league, Bayern averaging 61 per cent possession while Dortmund have averaged 57 per cent.
With centre-back Mats Hummels and full-back Thomas Meunier also sidelined BVB will be keen to protect their defence. Julian Brandt will play a big role while, for Bayern, centre-back Dayot Upamecano is one of the best ball-winners in the business.
And keep an eye out for BVB’s latest wunderkind. At 17 years of age and a towering 6ft 4in, Tom Rothe was on target against Wolfsburg and he could play a part in German football’s biggest game.
History
With 42 victories to 19 in all competitions since 1992, the Bavarians have had much the better of the head to head encounters and have, in fact, won the last six meetings, five of which were in Dortmund.
The last time the two teams met, at the Signal Iduna Park, Lewandowski scored twice in a 3-2 win for Bayern, while Haaland scored one for BVB.
While Bayern have a nine-point advantage the two teams’ Bundesliga 2022 results have been identical since the turn of the year, both picking up 29 points from 13 league games, each with nine wins, two draws and two defeats.
Betting Tip
With the draw at 5.41 and BVB at 6.18 to win, the run of Bayern Klassiker wins looks unlikely to end on Saturday, and the spread looks to be around 1.50 goals with Bayern at 1.96 -1.50 and BVB at 1.93 +1.50.
This should be Bayern’s big day… and I’m backing another goalfest!
