Bundesliga: Bayern Munich Won’t be Down for Too Long

countdown banner

Bayern Munich vs SC Freiburg

Bayern Munich find themselves in third place in the Bundesliga standings after being held to a 2-2 draw by RB Leipzig last time out, with Bayer Leverkusen and surprise package VfB Stuttgart taking the first and second seeds, respectively.

However, they’re still the defending champions, so there’s no reason to believe that they won’t be able to come back on top, especially when SC Freiburg visit the Allianz Arena this Saturday.

SC Freiburg are fresh from a much-needed 2-0 victory against Augsburg after going winless in their previous three Bundesliga matches. The Black Forest are currently eighth in the table, but a win here would put them back into the European mix.

But the pre-game SBOTOP betting odds are against them since they haven’t beaten Bayern Munich in a league match in quite some time.

Talking Points

Kane-Sane connection clicking for Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich are hoping that Harry Kane and Leroy Sane can help them lift the Bundesliga trophy this season
Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane with Leroy Sane during a Bundesliga match against Bayer Leverkusen

It’s clear that Harry Kane has adapted quickly to life in Germany because he is their current top scorer with nine goals and four assists in all competitions. Eight of those have come in the Bundesliga, and in fact, he has outscored the entire SC Freiburg squad ahead of this weekend.

Meanwhile, Sane has been another key cog in the Bayern Munich goal machine, recording six goals of his own in all competitions.

Kane has developed a great partnership with Leroy Sane so far this season. Kane’s ability to drop deep, hold up play, and pick out Sane’s forward runs has been one of Bayern Munich’s go-to plays, which is similar to the Kane-Son link-up at Tottenham.

Finally, Bayern Munich have found the perfect replacement for Robert Lewandowski. In fact, one can argue that Kane is a much better version because he has better leadership skills than Lewy after having held the captain’s armband before in North London.

Other than Kane and Sane, Bayern Munich have other weapons that they can go to if they need to give the fans their dose of Bundesliga 2023 highlights.

Mathys Tel is relishing his new off-the-bench role, and the 18-year-old is already their third-leading scorer with five goals and one assist.

Key players return for SC Freiburg

SC Freiburg finally halted their mini-slump last time out, and there’s more good news on the way for Christian Streich and co.

Defender Manuel Gulde and striker Michael Gregoritsch are back in the first-team fold after sustaining injuries last month, and the Black Forest will definitely need them against the Bavarian giants.

Gulde shores up SC Freiburg’s thin backline, while Gregoritsch was one of the team’s difference-makers last season. Gregoritsch’s return in particular will certainly boost their frontline, which already has Lucas Holer, Ritsu Doan, and top scorer Vincenzo Grifo, who now has two goals and one assist.

SC Freiburg have a Europa League group stage match against West Ham United later, so Streich has the option to alter his lineup and manage the load of their top players.

History

Bayern Munich have had SC Freiburg’s number here in the Bundesliga, and that is an understatement. SC Freiburg have only won one of their last 40 Bundesliga matches against Bayern Munich prior to this weekend (D8, L31), with the only win being a 2-1 result at home in May 2015.

In the 2022-23 campaign, Bayern Munich scored another league double over SC Freiburg with an impressive aggregate tally of 6-2.

However, the Black Forest managed to beat the Bavarian giants in the DFB-Pokal quarter-finals with a 2-1 scoreline last April before losing 5-1 to eventual champions RB Leipzig in the next round.

Thomas Muller has now won 321 of his 447 Bundesliga appearances thus far, and another win this weekend would put him level with Manuel Neuer, who currently holds the record for the most Bundesliga wins by a single player (322).

Betting Tip

We’re not surprised to see Bayern Munich as the favourites to win this weekend. The Bundesliga 2023 odds have the Bavarian giants at 1.15, while a rare SC Freiburg victory is priced quite high at 10.50 and a draw is at 7.20 in the 1X2 market.

Obviously, the safe bet is going for another Bayern Munich victory, but there’s also value looking at the possible goal count of this contest.

While their most recent meeting only featured one goal, that hasn’t been the case in their encounters prior. Since both sides have scored at least three goals in each of the last few seasons, Total Goals 2-3 at 2.51 or Over 3.75 at 1.93 might also be of interest to you.
