Bundesliga: Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen Set for a Collision Course

countdown banner

Bayern Munich vs Bayer Leverkusen

A rematch between two Bundesliga heavyweights is on the menu for football fans this weekend as Bayern Munich host Bayer Leverkusen at the Allianz Arena.

Bayern Munich continue to have their eyes set for their 10th consecutive Bundesliga championship and they’re currently sitting at the top of the table with 58 points, which is at least eight points over the rest of the chasing pack.

The other 17 teams are still gunning for the Bavarians’ head and one of them is Bayer Leverkusen, who are sitting at third place with 44 points.

When these two faced off few months ago, Bayern Munich grabbed a huge statement win over Bayer Leverkusen, which is why they’re favoured by the pre-match SBOTOP betting odds to claim the victory once again.

The humliating defeat should serve as a motivation for the visitors to try and grab at least a point from the defending champions, but it’ll be easier said than done.

Talking Points

Key reinforcements probable for Bayern Munich

The defending Bundesliga champions haven’t been impressive in these past few weeks, at least to their usual lofty standards.

Few weeks ago, Bayern Munich suffered a rare slip-up against VfL Bochum and it was followed up by a 1-1 draw against RB Salzburg in the first leg of their Champions League tie – in a game that they almost lost.

A key reason to their underwhelming outings is because they’ve been missing several key players, as Manuel Neuer, Thomas Muller, and Leon Goretzka have all missed action due to either injuries or non-COVID illnesses.

Manuel Neuer underwent knee surgery last February and Sven Ulreich has deputised in his place. The veteran goalkeeper was back on the pitch at Munich’s training centre recently, which is good news for the squad.

Thomas Muller captained for Bayern Munich when Manuel Neuer was out, but was then sidelined himself because of an illness. The midfielder was missing in their 1-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt and is in line to return.

Leon Goretzka has been out due to a knee tendon problem since mid-December and he’s been making steady progress, although we don’t expect him to play this weekend since Julian Nagelsmann has yet to reveal a timeline for his return.

Bayer Leverkusen still hot in the final third

Die Werkself’s offence is still wreaking havoc across the Bundesliga as they continue their build their Top 4 credentials.

Yes, they are virtually out in the running to win the Bundesliga this season, but their chances of making it back to the Champions League is high because of the way they’ve been playing all season.

Scoring goals has been the team’s forte, although preventing them on the other end has been their missing ingredient.

Patrik Schick remains as Bayer Leverkusen’s top scorer with 20 goals and one assists and he’ll be joined up front once more by Moussa Diaby (15 goals, 9 assists) and Florian Wirtz (10 goals, 13 assists).

Gerardo Seoane’s side is healthier compared to Bayern Munich and that should give them some hope ahead of this match.

History

Bayern Munich own a four-game winning streak over Bayer Leverkusen. The last time that this happened dates back to a period between 2005 to 2009 where the Bavarians have won nine straight.

At home, Bayern Munich have scored in each of their last 31 Bundesliga meetings against Bayer Leverkusen. The only time that they weren’t able to find the back of the net was in a 1-0 loss back in October 1989.

TO SEE UPDATED ODDS

Their reverse fixture took place in October where Bayern Munich thoroughly embarrassed Bayer Leverkusen. Julian Nagelsmann’s side was already up 5-0 after the first 37 minutes – which is the second-fastest time that they were able to build an advantage of 5+ goals.

Robert Lewandowski and Serge Gnabry each had a brace while Thomas Muller added one for himself. On the other hand, Patrik Schick scored the only goal for Die Werkself 10 minutes after halftime.

Betting Tip

The Bundesliga 2022 odds are heavily backing Bayern Munich to win this game. They are installed at 1.37 to win, while Bayer Leverkusen are the underdogs at 6.80 and a draw is pegged at 5.20.

While betting for a Bayern Munich is the obvious choice especially with how things turned out in the reverse fixture, perhaps you may also consider going for Over 3.50 @ 1.69.

Both sides aren’t gun-shy at all as they continue to keep on producing goals and Bundesliga 2022 highlights, and it’s no coincidence that the Bavarians and Die Werkself are two of the league’s best scoring teams.
