Bundesliga: Rampant Bayern Set for More Dominance at Mainz

countdown banner

FSV Mainz 05 vs Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich have put the entire Bundesliga on notice with their terrific start to 2020. They smashed both Hertha Berlin and Schalke by a combined score of 9-0 and are now just a point behind RB Leipzig for the league lead.

The Bavarians will be heavily tipped to add another convincing victory to their list of Bundesliga 2020 results as they pay a visit to struggling Mainz this weekend.

Die Nullfünfer are in a horrendous run of form which has seen them lose five of their last six games. Needless to say, the Bundesliga 2020 odds don’t foresee them getting a positive result against the in-form champions.

Talking Points

Mainz simply a mess

Things aren’t looking too good for Mainz at the moment. They’ve now lost their last three matches on the bounce after getting hammered 3-1 by Borussia Monchengladbach.

They made a good enough start as leading scorer Robin Quaison got his eighth goal of the season to give them an early lead against Gladbach. But they were unable to hold onto that advantage as the home side eventually came back to take all three points.

Mainz will be back at home to host Bayern, but that might not be all that helpful. That’s because they have been one of the worst home sides in the league this season. They’ve lost six of their nine matches at the Opel Arena while scoring a mere 11 goals.

They’ve lost three on the bounce in front of their home fans, which includes a 4-0 hammering at the hands of Borussia Dortmund.

Mainz have had a habit of suffering heavy defeats to the big boys this season. Aside from that Dortmund defeat, they also suffered a 6-1 pounding at the hands of Bayern as well as an 8-0 demolition at RB Leipzig.

Bayern going great guns

Bayern Munich have been simply brilliant since returning from the winter break as they breezed past Hertha Berlin and, more impressively, against top-four contenders Schalke. The trio of Robert Lewandowski, Thomas Muller, and Thiago Alcantara has scored on both occasions.

Lewandowski is now up to 21 goals on the season, one ahead of Timo Werner for the league lead. Meanwhile, Muller has had quite a resurgence under new manager Hansi Flick. The German forward has five goals and four assists in his last eight appearances.

The team has also received fine contributions from the likes of Philippe Coutinho, Ivan Perisic, and Leon Goretzka, who has recorded a goal and two assists in those two games.

It speaks to the sheer depth of Bayern’s squad that they have so many attacking weapons to call upon. Whichever line-up Flick starts is capable of beating any Bundesliga team.

They also seem to have shored up some of their issues at the back. After going five games without keeping a clean sheet at the end of last year, they haven’t let in a single goal in their last three matches.

Bayern’s away form in the league this season has been quite patchy. They’ve won five of their nine matches away from home, with two draws and two defeats. But they are showing signs of improvement.  They’ve now won back-to-back Bundesliga away matches for the first time this season after they beat Freiburg and Hertha.

History

Mainz’s record against Bayern is not great, as one would expect. Since 2004, they have won just five of their 32 meetings against the German giants, who have won 24. Their last win over Bayern came all the way back in 2016. Since then, Bayern have won seven of their last eight matches.

That includes back-to-back hammerings at the Allianz Arena. Bayern won 6-0 last season and repeated the feat with a 6-1 thumping in their first meeting this season. Mainz took a surprise lead after just six minutes, but Bayern stormed back with six unanswered goals.

Robert Lewandowski scored in both matches, as did 19-year-old Alphonso Davies, who has become the team’s regular starter at left-back.

Betting Tip

??
FSV Mainz 05 vs Bayern Munich Bayern Munich Asian Handicap -2.00 @ 1.84
February 01, 22:30 (GMT+8)

The SBOBET odds have Bayern pegged as massive favourites at 1.19 to pick up another win. Meanwhile, Mainz are priced at 10.50 to score a major upset, and a draw is 7.40.

Clearly, there’s not much value in betting on Bayern on the 1X2 market, so I suggest the Asian Handicap instead.

The combination of Bayern’s amazing form in front of goal of late and Mainz’s struggles — particularly against the top sides — suggests another comfortable win for the champions.

It might not be quite as dominant as the six goals they scored in their last two meetings against Mainz, but it’s fair to expect at least a three-goal margin of victory.
