Bundesliga: Maestro Muller is a Man to Savour

countdown banner

One Bundesliga newbie already seems doomed at the foot of the table, meanwhile the champions and perennial challenges already seem to be the main protagonists at the summit.

So, as far as the SBOTOP Bundesliga betting odds are concerned, there are probably few surprises right now.

That’s not to say matchday 10 did not produce a series of Bundesliga highlights on a milestone occasion for Muller and a dream debut for Kohfeldt.

Class is permanent

I suggested this clash could be a spectacle – what I didn’t expect was seven goals!

In fact, three for the champions inside the opening 35 minutes ensured the contest was all but over – although battling Berlin deserve some credit.

Taking on a wounded animal, though, in the shape of bruised Bayern always made this even tougher than the initial assignment would have proved.

Looking to bounce back after suffering their biggest defeat since 1978 – a 5-0 thrashing at Borussia Monchengladbach in the German Cup second round – Bayern Munich proved class is permanent.

Robert Lewandowski opened the scoring from the penalty spot before doubling the visitors’ lead eight minutes later.

Goals from Leroy Sane and Kingsley Coman on either side of Niko Giesselmann’s effort made it 4-1.

Julian Ryerson gave Union a slim hope with 25 minutes remaining but Thomas Muller completed the scoring.

Muller is magic

That last comment is something we have read plenty of times over the years – so much so that it can easily be taken for granted.

This time, however, it deserves special plaudits.

For not only did it add another milestone to his personal collection but he also notched a hat-trick of assists.

It was the 33-year-old’s 220th competitive goal for Bayern and means he has now found the net against all of the Bundesliga’s 17 other current clubs.

All told, ‘Mr. Bayern’ has registered 133 goals and 176 assists in 393 Bundesliga appearances. That’s a goal contribution every 1.21 games!

Freiburg are building something

Third in the table and unbeaten going into November – Freiburg appear to be going places.

Twenty-two points at this juncture in a Bundesliga season is a club record for the Black Forest side. They have also conceded a league-low seven goals so far.

As expected, they had far too much for the league’s bottom side as Nicolas Hofler and Vincenzo Grifo grabbed a goal apiece to see off Greuther Fürth with a comfortable 3-1 win.

Simon Asta misdirected a headed clearance into his own net before Hofler rose to head home the second, the ball bouncing off Marius Funk and the woodwork en route.

Fürth’s persistence paid off when Jamie Leweling ran onto a Branimir Hrgota cross and reduced the arrears but, five minutes later, any chance of a comeback dissipated as the hosts were awarded a penalty which Grifo slotted coolly into the top corner.

Freiburg have now extended their club record unbeaten run to 12 competitive matches and recorded their first home win in their new stadium.

New boss has desired effect for Wolves

Bundesliga: Florian Kohfeldt replaced Mark van Bommel as coach of VfL Wolfsburg
Florian Kohfeldt during VfL Wolfsburg’s match against Bayer Leverkusen

After an eight-game winless streak, Wolfsburg really needed to arrest that slide as they travelled to Bayer Leverkusen.

They certainly did make a statement as two goals in four minutes early in the second half from Lukas Nmecha and Maximilian Arnold ensured a winning start for newly appointed manager Florian Kohfeldt.

The Wolves cut ties with head coach Mark van Bommel with his tenure only lasting 13 games.

The former Bayern Munich player was hired in June to replace Oliver Glasner, who had led the club to a Champions League place but moved on due to internal differences with the top brass.

Despite van Bommel being at the helm during several head-scratching mistakes – including their first-round exit in the DFB-Pokal which was caused by making a sixth and illegal substitution during the added time – it was hardly enough time to make your mark in a job.

Such is modern-day football that a new man is now in charge and, on Saturday, substitute Dodi Lukebakio beat the offside trap and delivered a cross which Nmecha turned in from close range.

Then Arnold rifled an effort into the roof of the net after both Nmecha and Paulo Otavio had shots blocked,

It was an ideal start for ex-Werder Bremen boss Kohfeldt who oversaw his 40th Bundesliga win as a head coach and first since March last year.

It was also quite a way for Lukebakio to mark his 100th Bundesliga appearance as he immediately set up Nmecha for the opening goal.

All three of Nmecha’s goals so far this term have come away from home.
