Bundesliga: Hoffenheim’s Big Chance to Grab European Spot

Borussia Monchengladbach vs TSG Hoffenheim

The fourth and final Champions League spot in the Bundesliga table is still there for the taking. But if their recent performances are any indication, Borussia Monchengladbach don’t appear too keen to grab it.

Gladbach have been in awful form for a couple of months now, which has put not only their prospects for fourth, but for any European football next season in some peril.

They now host one of the teams who could potentially go and grab their European place: Hoffenheim. Die Kraichgauer, who had been in fine form of late, are eager to bounce back after suffering a shock thrashing last weekend.

Gladbach can’t get their act together

It’s been a rough couple of months to say the least for Borussia Monchengladbach. They were once riding high in the league, and most Bundesliga 2019 predictions would have tipped them to return to the Champions League next year.

But the wheels have quickly come off Dieter Hecking’s side this season as their Bundesliga 2019 results have fallen off a cliff.

Since Feb. 9, Gladbach have won just two of their 11 Bundesliga matches, with three draws and six defeats. The nine-point haul they picked up during that span was tied for the fourth-worst in the league, ahead of only Schalke as well as the relegation-bound duo of Hannover and Nurnberg.

Moreover, Gladbach have scored just eight goals in those 11 games, tying Hannover and Nurnberg for the fewest during that time.

One would think that being at home would be to Gladbach’s advantage, but it’s actually quite the opposite. Gladbach have gone winless at Borussia-Park since late January, losing four and drawing two of their last six home matches.

To be fair, two of those matches were tough assignments against leaders Bayern Munich and third-placed RB Leipzig. But they should still be doing much a better job of protecting their home turf.

Hoffenheim hoping to bounce back

Julian Nagelsmann’s time at Hoffenheim is coming to a close. But the 31-year-old manager is still looking to provide the club with one parting gift in the form of European football next season.

Hoffenheim are still very much in the mix for that Europa League spot thanks to a strong run at the end of the season. They recently went on a six-match unbeaten run, with five wins and one draw.

However, Hoffenheim’s impressive streak ended with a thud last weekend as they were demolished 4-1 at home by Wolfsburg.

But despite that significant setback, Hoffenheim can still leapfrog Gladbach in the table and into the Europa League places if they can bounce back and beat the hosts.

Hoffenheim have put up some fine performances away from home in recent weeks. They thrashed Augsburg 4-0 and smashed Schalke 5-2 in back-to-back away matches. Hoffenheim have scored 38 goals away from home this season, just one goal behind Bayern for the most in the Bundesliga.

Ishak Belfodil, who has been in amazing form of late. Over his last six outings, he’s recorded seven goals with three assists.

Hoffenheim have also given some of the top teams a few headaches when they’ve come to visit. They held both Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig to draws in back-to-back weeks in February. They were also winning against fourth-placed Eintracht Frankfurt, but they went down to 10 men and subsequently lost 3-2 in dramatic fashion.

That was Hoffenheim’s first and only Bundesliga away defeat since their first two away matches of the season.

History

Hoffenheim’s recent history against Gladbach isn’t particularly great. Over their last 10 meetings, Hoffenheim have won just once, with Gladbach getting four wins and five draws. Their first matchup of the season was an entertaining goalless draw.

It’s also been a while since Hoffenheim have won at Gladbach; their last victory came all the way back in 2012. Over the last six meetings between the two at Borussia-Park, Gladbach have three wins with three draws. Hoffenheim have held Gladbach twice in their last two trips.

They had a great opportunity to finally snap their winless drought at Gladbach last season. However, they conceded two late goals as the two played out an exciting 3-3 draw.

SBOBET tips Hoffenheim to finally end their Gladbach hoodoo this time around. Gladbach have just been awful for the past couple of months and don’t inspire any confidence, especially at home. Meanwhile, Hoffenheim have been quite impressive on their travels and have more than a few goals in them.

I predicted that Hoffenheim would eventually overtake Gladbach late in the season, and they do just that by beating them away from home.
