Bundesliga: Bayern’s Big Test in Freiburg

SC Freiburg vs Bayern Munich

Bundesliga champions FC Bayern head to the Upper Rhine this week for a difficult away fixture against SC Freiburg.

For many years more famous for its university than its football team, Freiburg is in a picturesque part of Germany, but Bayern will have no time for sightseeing as their opponents are ready to set them a tough examination.

On the face of it Bundesliga: Freiburg vs Bayern looks like a regulation away win for the champions, but the reality is that only one place separates the two sides, currently in sixth and fifth. It’s difficult to say which team has been the bigger surprise, be it Freiburg’s over achievement or FC Bayern’s sluggish start to their title defence.

The very latest Freiburg vs Bayern betting odds here at SBOBET have the visitors heavily odds on but, remarkably, a home win would take Freiburg above the champions in the Bundesliga table.

Talking Points

Bayern back on track

Hansi Flick has been looking after Bayern since the departure of head coach Niko Kovac on 3rd November. Having worked with Joachim Low as coach of the national team between 2006 and 2014, Flick has serious pedigree when it comes to coaching the best players in Germany, and Die Bayern started his tenure with a series of high scoring wins.

But within ten days of beating Red Star Belgrade 6-0 in a Champions League fixture at the end of November, FC Bayern lost twice in the domestic league, which rather stopped Flick’s momentum. Following a shock 1-2 home defeat to Bayer Leverkusen, the Bavarians suffered a 2-1 loss away to Borussia Monchengladbach last week. But since they have recovered with a Champions League win over Spurs and a 6-1 annihilation of Werder Bremen.

Robert Lewandowski has been in the form of his life this season. The Polish hit man has scored 18 league goals, including a brace in FC Bayern’s recent 4-0 destruction of Borussia Dortmund. And he scored another two against Werder Bremen but was overshadowed by Phillipe Coutinho as the Brazilian helped himself to a hat-trick.

Freiburg’s ultimate faith in Christian

Head coach Christian Streich has been at the Rhine club in various positions since 1995, but after eight years in charge, his team is playing as well as ever.

Freiburg’s sum exceeds the total of its parts, as a compact side with no big-name stars.

6 ft 2-inch striker Nils Petersen is the hosts’ top scorer with six, while midfield anchor Jonathan Schmid has added four goals, and is a big influence on the team as an ever-present so far this term.

The 24,000 capacity Mage Solar Stadion can be a tough place to visit, as Freiburg’s two most recent opponents have discovered. Eintracht Frankfurt and Wolfsburg both lost 1-0 here, Peterson and Schmid scoring a winner each.

Freiburg rarely appeared above halfway in the 2018/19 season, but after a series of solid performances in this campaign, they have put themselves in the race for a Europa League place.

History

The hosts have a humble record compared to their illustrious visitors, winning Bundesliga 2 in 2016, and they had a respectable 13th place finish last year while Die Bayern were picking up their seventh league title in a row.

The head to head Freiburg vs Bayern results have gone pretty much as you’d expect as well. FC Bayern have won 28 and drawn eight of the last 40 meetings, with Freiburg managing just four wins.

But Streich’s team more than held its own last season as both their meetings with the champions ended in a 1-1 draw. Having said that; in the previous year, Bayern won the games 0-4 and 5-0.

And home fans won’t want reminding that Freiburg’s biggest home loss (0-6) and biggest away loss (0-7) have both been at the hands of FC Bayern.

Betting Tip

??
SC Freiburg vs Bayern Munich SC Freiburg + 2.00 Asian Handicap @ 1.98
December 19, 03:30 (GMT+8)

At odds of 1.22 to win it will be a major shock if FC Bayern stumble in Freiburg but, as last season’s meetings show us, it isn’t entirely out of the question.

The draw is at 6.00 and Freiburg are at 12.50 to pull off the result of their season so far. And as they have a one in ten success rate against Die Bayern, surely that will tempt their most loyal fans!

They have kept clean sheets in both their last two home games, but Freiburg will have a huge job to keep Lewandowski and Coutinho quiet.

So in terms of a scoreline, I’d go somewhere between 1-3 at odds of 8.50, and 1-2 at 9.25.
