Bayern Munich 5-0 Fortuna Dusseldorf
FC Bayern have gone ten points clear at the top of the Bundesliga after smashing Dusseldorf for five as top scorer Robert Lewandowski helped himself to another brace.
All eyes were on the Bundesliga: FC Bayern vs Fortuna Dusseldorf game as the tea-time kick-off got underway, and 45 minutes later it was all over. Uwe Rosler’s Fortuna, in their second season back in the top flight, can’t have expected much from this game, but he’d have hoped his team would have put up more of a fight.
Well Fortuna have five more games to save their skin, while Die Bayern homes in on an eight successive league title.
Highlights of the game
A trip to the Allianz arena when you’re struggling in a relegation battle would be the last thing on your list. To stop the mighty Bayern in their tracks was the task facing Fortuna and they had a nightmare start when, on 15 minutes, the hosts went ahead. Thomas Muller floated a ball over to the right which Serge Gnabry fired into the box. Benjamin Pavard diverted it towards goal and it bounced off the hapless Mathias Jorgensen and into the net.
That knocked the wind out of the visitors and Bayern took them to task for the rest of the half. The hosts almost doubled the lead on 28 minutes when Benjamin Pavard made a surging run down the right, before squaring for Thomas Muller whose shot was brilliantly saved by Florian Kastenmeier.
But there was nothing the Fortuna keeper could do a minute later when Joshua Kimmich swung over the corner and Pavard evaded his marker to plant a firm header into the net.
Die Bayern were in irresistible form, and they took the game away from the visitors on 43 minutes with a fine team goal. David Alaba slid a lovely ball trough to Kimmich who backheeled to Muller, and the big striker picked up his eighteenth assist of the season as he teed up Lewandowski to fire home the third from eight yards.
If Fortuna thought Bayern might take a foot off the pedal in the second half they were sadly mistaken. Lewandowski had a taste for blood and he bagged his second of the game, five minutes into the second half with an impudent back flick into the net from Gnabry’s cross.
Fortuna were destroyed, demoralised and done. And two minutes later it was 5-0 as the visitors seemed to give up defending altogether. Gnabry had a shot blocked and Leon Goretzka picked up the loose ball, and when he was tackled the ball bounced to Alphonso Davies who took over with a neat touch, and then rifled a low shot into the bottom corner.
Pavard almost made it six, minutes later, with a speculative effort from 30 yards but Kastenmeier reacted quickly to save low to his left. This was becoming a humiliation for Dusseldorf but they should have pulled one back on the hour, only for centre back Andre Hoffman to head over from two yards.
Muller had a great chance to make it six, but he blazed his effort high and wide after good work from Alaba. And thankfully for Fortuna the sixth never came.
Key Statistics
The big stat at the end of this game was, of course, that FC Bayern have gone ten points clear at the top of the Bundesliga table.
The pre-match FC Bayern vs Fortuna Dusseldorf betting odds here at SBOBET had Die Bayern as low as 1.07 to win, so we went for over 1.75 goals by the break at 1.98, and with nine shots, three on target and three in the net by half time the champions had the job done and dusted.
Lewandowski’s scored his 43nd goal of the season, the 29th in the Bundesliga and he has now scored against all 18 of the top flight teams, and is the leading top flight scorer in Europe.
What’s next?
Borussia Dortmund head to Paderborn tomorrow to take on the bottom club, but the FC Bayern vs Fortuna Dusseldorf updates this evening would have done little to encourage Die Schwarzgelben players.
Next week FC Bayern have a real test away to Bayer Leverkusen. Die Werkself’s skipper Kai Havertz scored his fifth goal in four games since the restart, as Bayer won away to SC Freiburg yesterday to move up to third.
Wins for Eintracht Frankfurt and Werder Bremen today have made Dusseldorf’s day even worse. Though Mainz losing at home to Hoffenheim was a good result for Rosler’s men, they still sit a single point behind Mainz.
But it doesn’t get much easier. Next week Fortuna are at home to Hoffenheim before welcoming Dortmund the following week.
