Bundesliga: Bayern Extend Lead as Leipzig Slip Up

Bayern Munich’s control over the Bundesliga title race keeps getting stronger. The Bavarians continued their dominant run of form of late with a 6-0 demolition of Hoffenheim this weekend.

The defending champions’ lead at the top of the table is now up to three points as RB Leipzig lost further ground following a 1-1 draw at home against Bayer Leverkusen.

That result has also allowed Borussia Dortmund to close the gap on Leipzig for second as Jadon Sancho’s strike gave the BVB a narrow win over Freiburg.

Bayern Munich smash six past Hoffenheim

Bayern Munich just can’t be stopped at the moment. They picked up another impressive away victory as they humiliated Hoffenheim 6-0 at the Rhein-Neckar-Arena.

Bayern made very short work of their hosts as they were up 3-0 after just 15 minutes. Serge Gnabry got his sixth goal in his last four games after just two minutes, while goals from Joshua Kimmich and teenager Joshua Zirkzee — who started in place of the injured Robert Lewandowski — effectively ended the match as a contest.

Philippe Coutinho also got into the act as he scored his first two goals of 2020 either side of half-time.

However, the match was marred by visiting Bayern fans, who unveiled an offensive banner directed at Hoffenheim owner Dietmar Hopp in the 79th minute. The referee stopped the match for 20 minutes as a result, and when it was restarted, the two teams simply passed the ball between themselves for the last 13 minutes.

Hopp was also targeted by Borussia Monchengladbach fans last weekend and by Dortmund fans in their home match at Freiburg.

As for Bayern, the win pushed their undefeated run in all competitions to 13 matches, with 12 victories. They will now set their sights on making the semi-finals of the DFB-Pokal when they take on a struggling Schalke side in midweek.

RB Leipzig lose ground after 1-1 draw with Leverkusen

RB Leipzig might not be ready to be legitimate championship contenders after all. The Red Bulls’ Bundesliga 2020 odds of winning the title took another significant hit over the weekend as they could only draw at home against Bayer Leverkusen.

Patrik Schick equalised for Leipzig just three minutes after Leon Bailey had given the visitors a first-half lead. However, the hosts were unable to find a winner as Leverkusen bossed the match at the Red Bull Arena. They controlled 63 per cent of possession and outshot Leipzig, 15-10 (6-2 on target).

Leipzig’s Bundesliga 2020 results have fallen off significantly since the winter break, where they’ve lost two and drawn three of their last nine games.

They appeared to have turned a corner as they held Bayern Munich to a draw at the Allianz Arena and won three games on the bounce, including a 5-0 demolition of Schalke.

But Julian Nagelsmann’s side has been unable to match the consistency of the champions, which is why they are now three points adrift.

Leipzig’s next match will be away to Wolfsburg. Then, they host Tottenham for the second leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie, where they hold a 1-0 lead after the first leg.

Jadon Sancho scores in close Dortmund win

For just the second time in his nine-game Dortmund career, Erling Braut Haaland was unable to find the back of the net against Freiburg. The young Norwegian only started on the bench and came on for the final half-hour, where he didn’t score.

Luckily for Dortmund, their other teen phenom, Jadon Sancho, was on target as he scored the lone goal in a 1-0 home win for BVB. That goal was Sancho’s 14th of the Bundesliga season to go along with 14 assists, which is second in the league behind Bayern’s Thomas Muller (16).

Similar to the Bayern match, Dortmund’s match was halted as the home fans protested against Hoffenheim owner Dietmar Hopp.

Dortmund have now won four matches on the bounce after losing back-to-back away games against Werder Bremen in the cup and Leverkusen in the league. They are just one point behind RB Leipzig for second place and four behind leaders Bayern.

Up next, Dortmund will have a difficult match away to fourth-placed Borussia Monchengladbach, which will come before their huge round of 16 second leg against PSG in the Champions League. They are 2-1 up after Erling Braut Haaland’s brilliant brace in the first leg, although SBOBET odds only have them priced at 2.05 to progress to the next round, with PSG at 1.85.
