Africa Cup of Nations: Get Ready for Group F Fireworks!

countdown banner

Ghana vs Cameroon

Now this is an African Cup of Nations clash I’m looking forward to. When Ghana meets Cameroon we can expect to see an action-packed encounter.

After an opening game victory, Cameroon can make it to the knockout stages with another win against Ghana. And they are favourites to win Group F after the other game ended in a draw. But despite a disappointing stalemate against Benin, Ghana presents the biggest challenge to Cameroon and head coach James Kwesi Appiah will have his team set up to attack.

The latest Ghana vs Cameroon betting odds can hardly separate these two teams which both have genuine ambitions to go all the way, so we can expect a cracker at the Ismailia Stadium on Saturday.

Talking Points

Channel the aggression!

Cameroon is never going to be far away from the AFCON 2019 news, with the highest profile head coach in Clarence Seedorf, and a trail of controversy seemingly following them everywhere they go. The Indomitable Lions were due to host this tournament but were stripped of the right due to delays in preparations and the threat of violence near two of the proposed venues.

The players have also been kicking up a stink over their bonus structure, initially refusing to board their flight to Egypt and arriving at the AFCON a day late. Apparently, they wanted double the $34,938 they had each been offered, but eventually agreed to fly, while making it clear they weren’t happy.

It’s isn’t just the men either!

Cameroon’s women’s side recently crashed out of the World Cup in France amidst VAR controversy. And the players were accused of shaming the women’s game with their behaviour, refusing to play on after a controversial penalty was awarded and, according to England coach Phil Neville, using an over-physical approach.

Well, if the men of Cameroon can show the same passion tempered by a level of control, then who knows where they could get to. They did open their campaign with a victory against Guinea-Bissau with Yaya Banana and Stephane Bahoken on target. And Premier League fans will also recognise Brighton’s defender Gaetan Bong who could make a start against Ghana.

Seedorf is keen to challenge for the title, but his side will have to come together pretty quickly if they are to challenge hot favourites Egypt.

Ghana’s Band of Brothers

Cameroon’s opponents are spearheaded by two brothers, Andre and Jordan Ayew. Captain Andre plays for Fenerbahce in the tough Turkish league, while his younger brother Jordan plies his trade in the English Premier League for Crystal Palace.

Both have 15 goals for their country having scored in the opening fixture, a disappointing draw with Benin. And they have superb back up in the form of veteran striker Asamoah Gyan, with 51 goals in 106 international appearances he was persuaded to come out of retirement by the president no less.

The Black Stars surely would have won their opening fixture had John Boye not been sent off for a second yellow card.

History

The head to heads are in the Indomitable Lions’ favour. Cameroon has won both of the matches between these two teams since 2008, the last being a semi-final 2-0 win on their march to AFCON glory in 2017.

That was their fifth AFCON title, nudging them ahead of the Black Stars who have won four, but their last triumph was way back in 1982.

Both teams come into the game in decent form. Cameroon hasn’t lost in their last four games, the last defeat coming in a friendly with Brazil in November.

Ghana is unbeaten in four as well.

Betting Tip

??
Ghana vs Cameroon Total Goals 2-3 @ 1.81
June 30, 01:00 (GMT+8)

This game is incredibly tough to call with Cameroon marginal favourites at 2.60 and Ghana a whisker away at 2.63. The draw is available at 2.82 and that may seem the most likely result, an outcome which would preserve both teams’ unbeaten runs.

But I think Ghana, in particular, will be out for a win, to take the pressure off their final fixture, with the Ayew brothers in fine form. The question is whether or not the Cameroon players can channel their aggression and energy to put in a professional performance. It’s going to be a tight game which I suspect might end in a 1-1 draw or a nail-biting result with the odd goal in three taking the points.

There’s plenty of action on the way for SBOBET AFCON fans with the group climaxes around the corner. And then we can expect to see both these teams carrying the fight into the knockout phases.  Bring it on!
