Western Conference Finals Game 2
San Antonio Spurs @ Golden State Warriors (May 17, 09:00 GMT+8)
Ahead of the start of the Western Conference Finals, Coach Gregg Popovich shared his hilarious strategy against the Golden State Warriors: ‘Pray.’
But after Kawhi Leonard re-injured his left ankle that resulted to a huge live betting turnaround in Game 1, that strategy might actually be the best thing that the Spurs can do now.
The Klaw is officially listed as doubtful for Game 2, so betting odds are already pointing to a blowout win by the Warriors – the kind of victory that sports betting fans expected in the opener.
The importance of Leonard to San Antonio is undeniable. He is the Spurs’ best player on both ends of the floor and they need him if they want to challenge and upset the Warriors, something that they almost achieved if not for his injury.
San Antonio led by as much as 25 points in the first game, but following Leonard’s exit, Golden State rolled into an 18-0 run and by the end, outscored the visitors 56-33 to cap one of the biggest comebacks in NBA postseason history.
Already without veteran point guard Tony Parker, the Spurs’ attack lacked the usual flow and fluidity that they are known for. The defence, meanwhile, crumbled against the Warriors who had Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant firing on all cylinders.
Of course, the Dubs also had an injury blow with Andre Iguodala suffering some knee soreness and his absence will certainly decrease the effectiveness of the famed ‘death lineup.’ Though, after shrugging the rust from their long rest, it’s doubtful that the Spurs can limit them to the same extent as they did the last time out.
Game 1 showed who has the tactical advantage between the two teams. Popovich is clearly better than interim coach Mike Brown – after all, the latter’s rotation management was particularly awful that led the Warriors to trail early.
Nonetheless, the talent and depth that Brown has at his disposal should easily make up for his wrong decisions.
It remains to be seen how Pop will tweak his lineup and if he will abandon small ball to make LaMarcus Aldridge the focal point of their attack. Nonetheless, without a legitimate floor general running the show, this match should be more difficult.
It’s never wise to underestimate the Spurs —especially if they really pray—but I don’t think they have enough to keep up with the best team in the NBA for four quarters. With that said, choosing Golden State on Asian Handicap -14.00 @ 2.02 appears to be the best move.
