Ireland heads to Twickenham on Saturday with a historic Grand Slam in their sights and the most spectacular St Patrick’s Day celebration ever!
There will be a sea of green in London as Joe Schmidt’s team aims to pull off another win in a match many thought would be a title decider. But, for once, rugby results haven’t gone the way of Eddie Jones’ England, and betting odds say the big match is right in the balance.
European Six Nations Round 5
England vs Ireland
As well as being a St Pats’ party, this clash will be a battle royal. With both at odds of 1.92 to win, it’s going to be a pulsating watch. Ireland are aiming for only a third Grand Slam in their history. England captain Dylan Hartley will be there to spoil the party if he is fit, but the hosts will have to play well to stop the Greens. The brilliant Johnny Sexton’s kicking has brought him 40 points while Jacob Stockdale has run over six tries. This Ireland team will fancy a 12th consecutive win, but they’ll party even if they fail.
Wales vs France
There’s a three-way battle for second between England, Wales, and France, so there’s a lot of pride to play for when these two in-form sides meet. Fly-half Francois Trinh Duc was in superb form as France pulled off a shock win over England, while Wales overcame Italy with ease. A home advantage with a passionate crowd guaranteed means Wales are favourites to win at 1.80 with a -7.5 handicap; France are at 2.04 with that start.
Italy vs Scotland
At odds of 2.01 with a -16.5 points handicap, Scotland are expected to beat winless Italy. The hosts are at 1.83 with that +16.5 help. But it’s not a one team match. Italy’s performances have been better than the results, with winger Sebastian Negri the pick of their players, though Scotland have a good-enough side to beat England and dominate the pack.
