Crystal Palace 2-1 Chelsea
Crystal Palace shocked Chelsea and defied all betting tips to grab their first points of the season thanks to a Wilfried Zaha winner on the stroke of half time.
It was Zaha’s first appearance since getting injured on the opening day of the season and what a difference the speedy winger made. You could get Handicap Betting odds of around 7.00 on a home win; such was the mountain facing Roy Hodgson’s men.
But climb the mountain they did, and in doing so made the champions look distinctly ordinary. Selhurst Park was bouncing like never before this season and, in turn, that lifted the players. Andros Townsend particularly seemed to thrive on Zaha’s return, looking tricky and a constant threat.
Palace started brightly and only had to wait 11 minutes for their first goal of the season, but it came courtesy of a Chelsea player as Cesar Azpilicueta put through his own net. Nevertheless the ground erupted; but all went quiet again seven minutes later when Tiemoue Bakayoko headed a swift equaliser.
Home fans feared the worse but Palace refused to lie down and when Zaha finished smartly seconds before half time that was just the psychological lift the Eagles needed to see the game out in the second half, and to win their first crucial three points.
Contrary to popular belief, Palace isn’t already down and there’s a long, long way to go. It’s lift off for the Eagles, but it’s three defeats in eight for Chelsea.
