Premier League: Fighting Magpies Head to Fulham

Fulham vs Newcastle United

Third-placed Newcastle United take a trip to the picturesque setting of Craven Cottage on Saturday in search of another three points to continue their early season momentum.

The Magpies fought back to win 2-1 away to Wolverhampton Wanderers last week and boss Eddie Howe is hoping to mastermind another win on the road, but he will meet a Fulham side with more than enough quality to hurt most teams in the top flight.

Marco Silva’s Cottagers come into the game on the back of a record penalty shootout exit from the Carabao Cup at the hands of Championship side Preston North End.

So Premier League: Fulham vs Newcastle United is a chance for Silva’s men to get back on track; they currently sit 12th in the league table and are unbeaten in three in the league.

Talking Points

Cottagers looking for the cutting edge

Losing a penalty shootout 16-15 to Preston was not the way Silva hoped his Tuesday night jaunt up north would work out. Even though he made wholesale changes, the Fulham boss would have expected the 11 he put out to see off the Championship strugglers but, despite having 16 shots to Preston’s seven, they only managed to breach the Lancastrians’ defence once, when Reiss Nelson equalised in the second half.

It was a similar tale when Fulham faced West Ham United last week as, after going ahead through Raul Jimenez. They cut though the Hammers at will but, despite having 20 shots, the Cottagers couldn’t add to their lead and they paid a heavy price when Danny Ings scored a 95th-minute leveller.

Can Raul Jimenez help Fulham bounce back in their Premier League match against Newcastle United?

Emile Smith-Rowe and Alex Iwobi were particularly impressive, with Smith-Rowe doing brilliantly well to keep the ball in play on the by-line before pulling back a superb cross for Jimenez to sweep home.

The attacking midfielder was Fulham’s marquee signing of the summer following his move from Arsenal and he has settled just as well as Silva had hoped. Meanwhile, USA star Antonee Robinson is carrying on the form which made him the club’s Player of the Year last term.

It’s looking pretty good for Fulham but they need too pick up points, and the boss has a decision to make, having dropped Rodrigo Muniz to bring in Jimenez and, after the Mexican took his chance, it will be difficult to drop him.

Tonali’s return is like a new signing for the Magpies

Newcastle’s clash with Wolverhampton Wanderers showed that, despite another transfer window of frustration and division at the club, Howe still has some strength in depth and he used it supremely as he made three changes at the break which turned the match on its head.

At 1-0 down Howe brought on Joe Willock, Harvey Barnes and Sandro Tonali.

The Italian midfielder has only just returned to action after he had been banned throughout last season following his betting breaches, punished by the Italian Football Federation. He’s a top quality player and Howe will integrate Tonali carefully alongside midfield ace Bruno Guimaraes; the Azzurri star will have a big part to play this season.

As will winger Harvey Barnes who the Newcastle fans were crying out to see and, after the ever reliable Fabien Schar had levelled for the Magpies, Barnes repaid the fans with a stunning 80th-minute winner.

History

The head-to-head Fulham vs Newcastle United results have gone the way of Newcastle over the past six meetings, with the Magpies winning all six and scoring 13 goals and conceding just once.

Last season, the Cottagers suffered three defeats to Eddie Howe’s men: a 3-0 loss at St. James’ Park, followed by a 2-0 FA Cup defeat at Craven Cottage and then a 1-0 home loss in April, as Guimaraes scored the only goal of the game.

In terms of early season form, Newcastle have been very strong with three wins and a draw in the league so far whilst Fulham have started well too, recovering from a narrow 1-0 defeat to Manchester United on the opening day of the campaign to pick up a win and two draws. And when I take my look at the pre match Fulham vs Newcastle United 2024 betting odds … I see another point heading Silva’s way.

Betting Tip

This is a really tight game to call with Newcastle the marginal favourites at a price of 2.42, whilst the hosts are not far behind at SBOTOP odds of 2.61

A 1-1 draw at 6.37 is the most likely score line and, if it comes off that will make it three in a row for the Cottagers. To add, the other alternative bet which caught my eye is a 2-3 goals bet at 1.95.
