Manchester United are one of the most proactive Premier League clubs this summer. For the first time in a long while, the Red Devils are operating like a proper football club again, which was a foreign concept to most fans in the last decade.
Unlike last year, Manchester United have started to work with their phones as early as after they won the FA Cup. First, they revamped Erik ten Hag’s coaching staff with the additions of Rene Hake and Ruud van Nistelrooy, and then they’ve brought in their first summer signee, Joshua Zirkzee.
There’s still more work to be done, though, as they still have a shopping list of objectives to accomplish before the 2024-25 season starts. But so far, all signs point to them trending in the right direction, according to the SBOTOP Premier League 2024 odds.
Just in case you missed it, here are some of the latest Premier League 2024 updates, with a particular focus on the Red Devils.
Sancho, ten Hag end their cold war
Jadon Sancho and Erik ten Hag have finally put an end to their feud, which has lasted for nearly a year. The two fell out with each other after the manager said that the 24-year-old’s performances in training had been subpar, only for Sancho to claim he had been scapegoated via social media.
Because Sancho didn’t apologise to ten Hag, he was made to train with the youth team before being sent back to Borussia Dortmund on loan during the January transfer window.
Jadon Sancho almost won the Champions League with Borussia Dortmund, but they lost to Real Madrid in the final. On the other hand, Erik ten Hag won his second trophy in two years during the FA Cup.
With his loan stint with Borussia Dortmund finished, Sancho had to report back to Carrington, and he was seen training with the first team. According to Erik ten Hag himself, he and Sancho have reached a resolution to end their beef.
“As we said, we draw the line. Manchester United need good players, and Jadon is a good player. We have drawn that line, and we move on,” said ten Hag.
Despite this, it remains an open secret that Manchester United will continue to listen to offers for Jadon Sancho this summer. Borussia Dortmund are one of his well-known suitors, but the Yellow Wall couldn’t meet halfway with the Red Devils in terms of the transfer fee.
For now, Jadon Sancho is expected to be a full participant in Erik ten Hag’s preseason programme.
Manchester United ramp up effort to get rid of deadwood
Besides Sancho, Manchester United will also look to sell some of their players this summer to raise funds for their future transfers, and the three players that are on the chopping block are Mason Greenwood, Victor Lindelof, and Scott McTominay.
Mason Greenwood just finished his productive loan stint with Getafe, but the Red Devils are keen to offload him because of his tarnished reputation. According to reports, Marseille are in pole position to get the 22-year-old winger, as they reached a €31.6 million transfer agreement with Manchester United.
In stark contrast, Manchester United have yet to find a suitor for Victor Lindelof, who will be out of contract next year. The 30-year-old centre-back is reportedly looking for a club that could give him regular playing time, especially with the Red Devils aiming to add Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, or even Jarrad Branthwaite.
Scott McTominay could also be on the move, despite being one of the team’s top scorers last season. The central midfielder has suitors in Fulham, West Ham United, and Galatasaray.
Manchester United lose first preseason match
The Red Devils have already started their club friendlies, but they’re off to a poor start after a 1-0 loss against Rosenborg.
The Norwegian side were the dominant team from the get-go, as they had 22 shots compared to only five by the Red Devils, although it can be noted that Rosenborg are midway through their domestic campaign while Manchester United only played their youngsters and a handful of veterans, such as Casemiro, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Marcus Rashford, Mason Mount, and Jonny Evans.
Radek Vitek was easily the Man of the Match for United after turning in a good shift in goal. If it weren’t for the 20-year-old, who made six key saves, the Red Devils would’ve conceded more goals.
Manchester United will play four more friendlies against Rangers, Arsenal, Real Betis, and Liverpool to ramp up their conditioning before they take on Manchester United in the Community Shield.
