Brentford vs Newcastle United
Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United heads to the capital city on Sunday to wrap up its 2023–24 league campaign against Thomas Frank’s Brentford.
The Bees come into the game on the back of a 2-1 win away to Bournemouth, while Newcastle lost a six-pointer away to Manchester United on Wednesday night. And that result meant that the Magpies still have work to do to qualify for Europe next season.
So, while Premier League: Brentford vs Newcastle United gives the hosts a chance to thank their fans as they sign off for the summer, for the visitors, the result is all that matters.
The Premier League 2024 betting odds reckon Howe’s team might just edge it, but the Bees can have a serious sting, and they will be playing without fear.
Talking Points
Seventh looks likely for Newcastle
The Magpies clash with Manchester United was a huge moment in the season for both clubs, but the outcome—a win for Manchester United—didn’t settle anything for either because Chelsea beat Brighton and Hove Albion to move three points ahead and take a firm grip on sixth place.
Mauricio Pochettino’s Blues are unlikely to slip up at home to Bournemouth on Saturday, and that will leave Newcastle battling with Manchester United for seventh place, which brings with it Europa Conference League football. There is the slim possibility of another place if the Red Devils win the FA Cup final against Manchester City…but that seems unlikely.
Anthony Gordon and Lewis Hall were on target for Newcastle against Erik Ten Hag’s team, and Gordon could easily have won a penalty in the first half when he appeared to be fouled by Amrabat in the area. The winger’s sock was torn, and he had a cut on the back of his ankle, but VAR declined to intervene.
Gordon was adamant he should have been awarded a spot kick, saying, “I have watched it back, and it’s a clear penalty. I do not mind the referee getting the decision wrong on the pitch, but I do not understand what the point of VAR is.
Join the club, Anthony!
The England star will hope to have better luck against the Bees. Along with experienced wingback Kieran Tripper, he is the Magpies’ top assist maker with ten, while Alexander Isak is the top scorer with 20 goals. The hosts’ defence will have plenty of work to do on Sunday afternoon.
Brentford eyeing a fast finish
The Bees are in 16th place in the league table, but they could move up to 15th with a result against the Magpies. Not so long ago, they were still in the relegation mix, but a run of three wins from five games has pulled Frank’s boys well clear of danger.
In fairness, they have had a relatively gentle run of fixtures, as far as that is possible in the Premier League, but Brentford have met the challenge superbly with a 2-0 win over Sheffield United and a 5-1 hammering of Luton Town, and the Bees were well out of the mire when they beat the Cherries last week.
They fought hard to beat Bournemouth and thought they had let it slip when Dominic Solanke equalised Bryan Mbeumo’s late strike. But Brentford top scorer Yoanne Wissa popped up with one of his Premier League 2024 highlights with a 96th-minute winner with his 11th goal of the campaign.
With nine goals and six assists, Mbeumo has been in fine form too, while the return of Ivan Toney from a long-term suspension has given the Bees more menace going forward.
Newcastle are the best side they have come up against for a while, but Brentford will be keen to sign off for the summer with a win, and if the Geordies commit too many men forward, they could easily get stung.
History
With six wins to one and one draw, the Magpies have bossed the head-to-head Brentford vs Newcastle United results, in fact, the Geordies have won the last four meetings, including a 1-0 win at St James’ Park in September. When Brentford and Newcastle met in April last season, they both had Europe in mind but by the end of the match a 2-1 win to Howe’s men meant the Bees’ European dreams had faded while Newcastle were on their way to the Champions League.
Recent form slightly favours the Bees with three wins, two draws and a single defeat from the last six games, while Newcastle have won three, but drawn one and lost two.
Betting Tip
Brentford are at SBOTOP odds of 2.63 to win this game, and the draw is at 3.46 and I expect a really entertaining tussle, but with more on the line, I think Newcastle will edge it, and I have given serious consideration to a long shot on the Magpies to win 3-2 at odds of 16.36.
You know what? I’ll sack my instinct for a Newcastle 1X2 win at a price of 2.16 and go for it!
