It took them a while, but Manchester United have finally got it going in the transfer market as they’re bringing in new reinforcements this week ahead of the 2022/23 Premier League season.
This is great news for Erik ten Hag and co., especially since they’re banging in form during pre-season with back-to-back victories against Liverpool and Melbourne Victory where they scored four goals apiece and conceded only once.
Meanwhile, Chelsea have revealed their newest defender and Arsenal are looking for additional depth on that end themselves. And for the second year in a row, another Spanish hero bids farewell at Elland Road.
SBOTOP is here to serve you the latest in the English top-flight, so read on below to know the top Premier League 2022 updates.
Manchester United confirm Eriksen arrival, de Jong deal still a work in progress
Christian Eriksen has been confirmed as Manchester United’s second signing this summer following Tyrell Malacia, as he has arrived on a free transfer and penned a new three-year deal.
After returning from his cardiac arrest at Euro 2020, the Danish midfielder played for Brentford on a short-term contract last season where he made instant impact – notching one goal and four assists to assure their stay in the English top-flight.
Manchester United are also confident that Lisandro Martinez will be coming on after agreeing to a deal worth £45-M with Ajax. The Argentine expressed his desire to play in the Premier League, and he ultimately chose to reunite with ten Hag instead of Arsenal.
On top of all of this, the Red Devils have maintained their pursuit of Frenkie de Jong, who is still owed £17-M in deferred salary payments by Barcelona.
The Catalan giants have been unable to register their new signings Franck Kessie, Andreas Christensen, and Raphinha due to financial fair play restrictions, so they’ve reportedly advised the former Ajax star to leave in order to balance their wage bills.
Their previous agreement of €65-M plus bonuses with the Red Devils is still in place, and the ball is now on de Jong’s camp on whether this will push through or not.
Another target for United is Antony, who is also one of Erik ten Hag’s players at Ajax. The Red Devils have yet to reach an agreement for the Brazilian, so they must hurry since Liverpool have reportedly held discussions over a potential deal this week.
Chelsea fill centre-back need, ditch Ronaldo interest
It’s a sad day to be a Napoli supporter, but it is exciting times for Chelsea as they finally got the class defender that they need in Kalidou Koulibaly. He is their second marquee acquisition after getting Raheem Sterling few days ago.
Koulibaly signed a four-year deal with the Blues and he’ll get to reunite with Senegal teammate Edouard Mendy to try and form one of the best defences in the Premier League next term.
He is the perfect replacement for Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger, who both left for Barcelona and Real Madrid respectively earlier this summer.
Winning silverware was the main motivation behind Koulibaly’s decision to join Chelsea since he has only lifted one major trophy with Napoli, the Coppa Italia in 2019/20. It can be noted that the Blues won the Champions League a year ago and were finalists in the 2022 FA Cup and Carabao Cup.
In other news concerning the Blues, Cristiano Ronaldo had been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge amid reports that he’s unhappy at Old Trafford, but Thomas Tuchel shuts down the thought of getting him.
Raphinha leaves Leeds United, Arsenal keen for new defender
Barcelona recently unveiled Raphinha as their new signing after securing a deal with Leeds United worth up to £55-M. The Brazilian forward had appeared set for a move to Chelsea, but his preference has always been to join the Catalan side.
That makes Raphinha the second key player to depart Elland Road this summer following Kalvin Phillips’ switch to Manchester City, which hurts Leeds’ Premier League 2022 odds ahead of next term.
Over at North London, Arsenal have now reached an agreement in principle with Manchester City to acquire Oleksandr Zinchenko for around £30-M, as per football insider Fabrizio Romano.
The Ukrainian full-back will be the second City player to move to the Emirates this summer following Gabriel Jesus’ arrival two weeks ago – making him the Gunners’ fifth summer signing. In lieu of Zinchenko’s forthcoming departure, Manchester City have turned their attention to Brighton’s Marc Cucurella, but both sides have yet to agree on a possible deal.
