If there’s one thing that we know about sports, it is that winning championships is anything but guaranteed.
With the WTA composed of topnotch players from all over the world along with the gruelling schedule, winning a Grand Slam usually involves a lot of perseverance and luck.
Majority of the top players here in the women’s division have tasted glory at some point of their careers, but others have yet to know what it feels like.
But even if they have yet to win one in their careers so far, it is never too late to try and chase one. Furthermore, the fact that they haven’t brought home the biggest prize should definitely serve as their main motivation moving forward.
Here at SBOTOP, we list some of the recognisable names in the women’s division whose first Grand Slam remains elusive from their hands.
Elina Svitolina
Upon first glance on her tennis resume, it is clear that Elina Svitolina is a household name in the WTA.
The Ukraine international has 15 WTA singles titles under her belt and she is currently the fifth-ranked player in the world. However, one thing that is missing from her trophy case is a Grand Slam championship.
The closest that she got to a Grand Slam was when she was having a great campaign in 2019. Svitolina went to as far as the semifinals in the Wimbledon and in the US Open, but she lost against Simona Halep and Serena Williams.
This year, Svitolina made it to the quarterfinals in the French Open, but she was upset by Nadia Podoroska. And eventually, we saw the young Iga Swiatek defy the WTA 2020 odds to win her first Grand Slam.
The 26-year-old is approaching her prime years and time is on her side as she vies for her first Grand Slam.
As long as she avoids any major injury, Elina Svitolina should eventually at least add one to her decorated career.
Karolina Pliskova
Karolina Pliskova had a bright outlook when she balled out early on, although she has yet to fulfil her promising potential.
The Czech Republic native boasts a 64.6-per cent singles winning percentage, but she has yet to capture her first Grand Slam title.
One year after making her debut in the WTA’s top 10 in 2015, Pliskova raised eyebrows when she went all the way to the US Open Final against Angelique Kerber.
Pliskova gave Kerber a run for her money by pushing the match to three sets, but her efforts fell short in the end.
The farthest that Pliskova went to after that was the semis of the 2019 Australian Open. But since then, she has been getting mixed WTA 2020 results.
Like Svitolina, Pliskova is in the midst of her prime at 28 years old. However, she would need to rediscover her aggressive and powerful form just like in 2016.
Aryna Sabalenka
Another top 10 player makes it in the list in Aryna Sabalenka, although she has been flying under the radar compared to her more known counterparts.
Sabalenka was a relative unknown despite a promising junior’s career. But when the calendar flipped the page to 2017, the Belarus international has been on the rise.
After representing her country in the 2017 Fed Cup, she began having more success in the WTA in a span of two years by winning three titles in China along with a WTA Elite Trophy.
She was also named as the WTA Newcomer of the Year back in 2018 because of her successful run and she eventually made her way into the top 10 for singles.
Although Sabalenka has yet to advance past the fourth round in any Grand Slam competition, the future is bright as she is continuously improving by the day.
She is just 22 years of age and I wouldn’t be surprised if she’ll get her first Grand Slam anytime soon.
Coco Gauff
Teenager Coco Gauff is indeed an intriguing prospect in the WTA as she was touted as the next American superstar to succeed Serena Williams.
Gauff enjoyed a superb run in the professional ranks since last year, which includes fourth and third-round appearances in the Wimbledon and US Open respectively.
This year, the 16-year-old had her best finish up to date. Coco Gauff went to as far as the fourth round in the Australian Open but was eventually eliminated by eventual champion Sofia Kenin.
As of the moment, Coco Gauff is 48th in the WTA rankings, which makes her the first teenager to break into the top 50 in over 15 years.
Coco Gauff’s future is indeed bright here in the WTA. If she gains more experience and improves her physique, the American international will be a nightmare to deal with for a long time.
