Premier League: Wolves Ready to Pounce On City Anew

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Manchester City

Manchester City’s first Premier League assignment this 2020/21 campaign will be a visit to the Molineux stadium against the Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Sky Blues, who were pretty much involved in the Lionel Messi saga during the brief hiatus, are ready to kick off their campaign in style as they are gunning for their third Premier League championship in the last four years.

But their visit at the Molineux won’t come easy at all, especially when looking at their head-to-head Premier League 2020 results against them last term.

The Wolves notched two straight victories against them and making it three will be their sole purpose come this weekend.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side won in their first game versus Sheffield United during the last time out, and they will carry some momentum as they head back home.

Can the Wolves make it two in a row? Or will Manchester City enter the winning column in their first Premier League match of the season?

SBOTOP has you covered with the latest updates in this match preview.

Talking Points

The Wolves are eager to flip the page

The Wolves are coming into this game with mixed emotions given their recent results.

Although they thumped the Blades in their first Premier League game, they were shown the door early by Stoke City in the EFL Cup when Jacob Brown scored the winning goal at the 86th minute.

Meanwhile, they are set to lose a key piece in Diogo Jota as he signed a £45-M deal to join Liverpool.

The speedy forward’s services will be sorely missed especially since he was their second top scorer last term.

They did, however, sign 18-year-old Fabio Silva in a relatively cheap deal. And so far, he has drawn praise from team manager Nuno Espirito Santo.

The Wolves should hover around the fifth to eighth spots of the Premier League table. But if they see an opportunity to move higher, they will pounce on it right away.

Manchester City are ready to get their feet wet

Pep Guardiola insists that City have moved on from Lionel Messi, and now they turn their focus on reclaiming the English top-flight crown.
During the offseason, the Sky Blues injected youth to their roster with some shrewd signings. They brought in Nathan Ake and Ferran Torres to bolster their depth on offence and defence.

These young turks will join a formidable core consisting the likes of Aymeric Laporte, Ederson, Riyad Mahrez, Raheem Sterling, Sergio Aguero, and their top playmaker in Kevin De Bruyne.

Manchester City may have had a decent campaign last season, but they weren’t able to bring home the trophy because they ran into a juggernaut in Liverpool.

But now that everyone’s entering with clean slates, this season’s trophy will be up for the taking.

They are one of the heavy favourites to win it all this season according to the latest betting odds, and if they can get their chemistry clicking fast, Pep Guardiola’s side will be a force to be reckoned with.

History

The Wolves were the only team to achieve a Premier League double against the Sky Blues in the 2019/20 season. Nuno Espirito Santo’s side compiled an aggregate tally of 5-2 in the said games.

With their win over Sheffield United in the last time out, the Wolves are now one victory away to become the fourth club to reach the 2,000-win mark. Only Manchester United (2,234), Liverpool (2,212), and Arsenal (2,117) have more.

They are also looking to start a Premier League season with back-to-back wins. The only time that they did so was back in 2011/12.

Manchester City have lost their last seven away games versus the Wolves.

Betting Tip

??
Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Manchester City Manchester City Asian Handicap -1.00 @ 1.91
September 22, 03:15 (GMT+8)

Despite the Wolves’ recent dominance over the Sky Blues, they aren’t backed by the Premier League 2020 odds to win in this upcoming fixture.

Manchester City are priced to win at 1.52, while the Wolves are at 5.60 and chances for a draw are priced at 4.20 in the 1×2 market.

Moreover, goals won’t be a given in this Molineux clash. While Manchester City have plundered 102 goals last term, the Wolves had one of the league’s top defences – having conceded goals only 40 times.

Over their last few meetings against each other, Under 2.50 goals was the common trend. Hence, I would also suggest that you place your bets in Under 2.50 @ 2.21.

But while the Wolves have been better last term, the Sky Blues’ reloaded roster might just overwhelm them.

Pep Guardiola’s side are primed to take care of business to grab their first win of the season.
