La Liga: Getafe Gear Up for Massive Atletico Madrid Clash

Getafe vs Atletico Madrid

Both Getafe and Atletico Madrid still have much to play for in the penultimate round of the La Liga season. Atletico Madrid still have a shot at overtaking Sevilla for third place, while Getafe are barely holding onto sixth and a spot in the Europa League play-off rounds.

Getafe, who have been on a disastrous run of form since the restart, need a good result against the Rojiblancos to stay ahead of Real Sociedad.

However, Getafe have not gotten the better of their Madrid neighbours in a long time, and the La Liga 2020 betting odds will be against them at home against an in-form Atleti side.

Talking Points

Getafe’s incredible fall

Getafe’s dreams of making the Champions League are long gone after a truly disastrous skid since returning from the restart. The Azulones have won just one of their nine games, with five draws and three losses.

To their credit, they did beat Real Sociedad, their chief rivals for that Europa League play-off spot. They also gave Real Madrid all they could handle in a 1-0 defeat where Real were awarded a generous penalty.

However, they can’t be excused for only managing a draw last time out against Deportivo Alaves, who had lost six games in a row and seven of their first eight games since the restart.

La Liga: Can Getafe pull-off a win against in-form Atletico Madrid?

Goals have been hard to come by for Jose Bordalas’ side all season; they have just 43 goals in 36 games, which is middle of the pack. But scoring has been even harder since the restart. They’ve only scored six goals in nine games and just one in their last four.

Leading scorer Jaime Mata (11 goals) hasn’t found the net since his brace against Sociedad five games ago. Meanwhile, super-sub Angel Rodriguez (10 goals) has also gone cold; it’s now been nine matches since his last goal.

Meanwhile, Getafe’s home form has been middling for most of the season. They’ve won just eight of their 18 games, with six draws and four losses.

Atletico’s amazing unbeaten run continues

Contrary to Getafe, Atletico Madrid’s La Liga 2020 results since the restart have been outstanding. The Rojiblancos are unbeaten in their last nine games, with six wins and three draws. Two of those draws came in tough away matches against Athletic Bilbao and Barcelona, which was an exciting 2-2 affair.

Although, Atleti’s resurgence predated the lockdown. Going back to early February, they have now gone 16 matches unbeaten in La Liga and the Champions League, where they knocked out holders Liverpool in the round of 16.

Atleti were still able to beat Real Betis at home last time out despite going down to 10 men for the last half-hour. Substitutes Yannick Carrasco and Diego Costa combined to supply the winner 16 minutes from time.

Costa has been a major contributor for Atletico, with three goals and two assists since the restart. He has provided Diego Simeone with another capable weapon up front aside from the inconsistent Alvaro Morata and Marcos Llorente.

Atleti’s attack has managed to score in every match during their 16-match unbeaten run, which began after their 1-0 defeat against Real in the Madrid derby.

However, Atleti’s trademark defence hasn’t been quite as reliable, especially away from home. They’ve kept just two clean sheets in their last nine away league matches, which also happened to be their only wins during that stretch. They have drawn 10 of their 18 away matches this season, with just five wins and three defeats.

History

Atletico have dominated their Madrid neighbours in their La Liga head-to-head matchups through the years. They’ve won each of their last 11 meetings and have won 13 of their last 14. And to make matters worse, Getafe have not even scored a single goal against Atleti in any of those 14 matches.

Getafe’s last win over Atleti came all the way back in 2011. They’ve won just three times overall in their last 26 La Liga meetings, with Atleti winning 19.

Atleti won their first meeting this season at the Wanda Metropolitano 1-0 thanks to a goal from Alvaro Morata.

Betting Tip

??
Getafe vs Atletico Madrid 1X2 Atletico Madrid @ 2.29
July 17, 03:00 (GMT+8)

Despite their disastrous run of late, SBOBET odds still have Getafe priced at a respectable 3.45 to get a home win, with Atletico 2.24 underdogs. A draw is at 2.92.

Based on recent form coupled with the overwhelming one-sided history between the two clubs, it’s hard not to go with an Atleti away win.

Getafe’s struggling attack will find it tough to get past Atleti’s stingy defence. And on the other end, the visitors should have enough weapons to get the goal they need in a match that is unlikely to be a high-scoring affair.
